Vapor taste variable with power sources?
I've been vaping on a batch of DIY juice with LorAnns pomegranate. I dig this stuff - nice throat hit, and the flavor reminds me a bit of TW Red Bull. I was in my home office last night with a 901 USB pass-thru hooked to a powered hub and noticed a bit of a funky taste. Not sure I can describe it. Just a bit wrong, somehow. Maybe like hint of rotten fruit. It seemed to give me a little bit of a headache. Switched over to a Kensington power pack to watch some TV and didn't notice the taste. Vaped a bit in the car today (again with the same 901 USB pass-thru, hooked to a USB to cigarette lighter adapter) and all was well. I'm back home and hooked into this USB hub and the funky taste is back. Am I completely loosing my mind? I'm beginning to think that the source of my USB power is causing the funk. Obviously I'm not actually tasting "eu de USB hub", but perhaps there's a power variance either high or low that's causing the atomizer to heat the liquid not enough, resulting in a different flavor characteristic of the liquid... Or it's heating too much and burning off a bit of crud from the atomizer and I'm tasting that. Just wanted to throw out the idea to see if anyone has had similar experiences.

I, too, have noticed that some smoking juice flavors do not taste as good when using a higher-voltage vaping device/system.

I find the same thing - all is well with the Kensington and the Coby, but not satisfying with a USB hub. I figure it has to do with the lower power output - a basic usb hub might have 500mA power vs 1.5A for the Kensington.

With high current and high voltage power supplies(5Volts and over 1amp power delivery), I find that the most of the juices I vape taste burnt or have a distorted flavor. The throat hit is also harsh. It seems the vape juices are becoming burned now much like a regular cig. Having experimented with 3.6volts, 4.8 volts and over 5volts, I find that between 3.6 volts and 4.5 volts seems to be the best to preserve flavor and not "burn" the juice. Just my $0.02's!

Interesting... I knew I didn't like the results with a hub, but hadn't thought about why until this thread went up.
The Coby is 5v/1a and the Kensington is 5v/max1.5a output. A D-Link DUB-H4 USB hub is 12v/500mA. So the voltage is way higher, but actual power output would be 20% less with the hub.
Now that I see the numbers, I think plugging into a hub can easily shorten the life of the passthrough - using too voltage that's too high will can damage any electric or electronic device. I'm going to stick with lower voltage power supplies.

Reason: corrected hub output

Thanks all for the ideas and validation. Good to know I'm not crazy, at least about this.

I noticed this also happens from different atomizers. I used a small hole atty for a while. Had to suck harder and noticed more heat to fire the juice. I switched atomizers (had the same type with larger holes) Ran cooler, vapor was smoother, and the sweetness came through better.
The hotter they burn, the harsher it is.

Hi all, Iv’e been using a passthru for my 801 for a few weeks now and today I used my batteries and there was a BIG difference! The battery gave a deeper hit, more vap and better taste. That’s when I noticed air passes thru the passthru and not the batteries. Now I’m also curious as to how much power comes thru the passthru as compaired to the batt.s after reading this. Would anybody know this? There was no info when I bought it. Perhaps some day you will be able to buy by the stats.

Answered your question in the other thread.

thats why I think we need an e-cig with a dial to adjust the voltage from around three to six volts in order to be able to adjust for personal flavour preferences..lol.
