After studying the last cup pic of yours, it appears that when you take a hit the liquid enters from the 4 holes, nears the coil and gets vaped. It may get sprayed or splatters onto the coil. I don't notice any heaps of carbon crud on the bottom and the coil doesn't rest on the bottom.
That would explain why its called a 4 hole. My mini had 2 horizontal slits parallel to the coil. All that remains is 3 "large" pieces lol and about 16 small ones............grrrr. It didn't release from the knurling well at all.

I just ordered 2 spares....would be nice to be able to make our own in case the gov sticks their nose in it.

Finally, something that shows so much promise but we dare not step on the tobacco lobby toes. Somethings still amaze me.

Ahh, I finally found a photo of Exogenesis's drawings. I couldn't find his original thread, just a copy that Kate posted of his drawing. Maybe exo will be generous enough to share a link to his original work. Hope he doesn't mind if I repost it, here. Thanks, exo- if I had seen your work before I posted this thread, I would have covered different ground.

Tony, the following drawings are from the original inventor of the ecig, Lik Hon. He is an amazing inventor, envisioning everything from an LCD screen to piezoelectric vaping, so I will simply let him describe the atomization process-

That backflow preventer has evolved into a more robust venturi thing-a-ma-jig, but take a look at what this guy had envisioned years ago- search for Lik Hon and Li Han:

One more, then I'll stop, this describes the atomization process a little more fully-

Edit: oops, I relabelled the figure numbers because they were illegible, and screwed them up, but it is obvious what the text is describing, just ignore my mistakes.

This is something that I found while looking around. Don't know if anyone is even interested in it, but it seems this place will sell the nickle foam.

Metal Foam (Ni) - China Foam Metal,Ni in Fireproof Material

Of course it's from China. But it might help out someone who wants to try to build their own atomizer.

Quanity might be high though.

As soon as I saw the picture on that page, which I have seen before, I thought that this stuff's main use might be NiCd and NiMH batteries.

It possibly could be but I'm not exactly sure. I just got intersted in the mods threads and I'm currently waiting for one of my 510 atty's to fry so I can tear it apart. There's been a wealth of information just on this thread which is greatly appreciated. It was just a thought in case someone might be looking to get some of the foam.

Thanks for the links guys.
The inventor was so far ahead of his time.

I did find a ceramic fuse, gutted it and managed to cut it to length with a dremel tool. The pressed sand cutoff wheel is wonderful. Still, putting holes in it is another matter. I also stumbled on some very high temp plastic fittings used for electrical work. A soldering iron won't dent it. Be easy to turn in a drill and to put holes in. The heat of a 5 sec coil shouldn't break it down to release anything harmful I'd think. Also , teflon would make a nice juice pot.

Having tools to design and build micro rc models doesnt hurt either lol.

Just looking for materials to make attys if the gov steps in. Manual batteries,, carts and chargers don't seem to be a problem. Small rc stuff at WalMart have chargers that will to the lipo batteries......

Keep up the excellent work...and take a break to vape!

Think imageshack has removed mogar's images (he last posted in June),
worth having a look at this piccy this thread in the post:
Manufacturers/Suppliers: What's in my atomizer?

Many good pictures in there.
