in the post "HOW TO: DC Jack as 901 Fitting" the pictures are missing. Is it just to old or have I got a browser issue?

Nah, I'm just lazy and absentminded and haven't posted them back up yet.
See post #18 in this thread. That picture/diagram should make it pretty clear.

I am going to try to use Kelemvor's idea about bending the tab, but I bent it out far enough that it is not touching the metal attached to the threads, now I can actually use it as a momentary switch without any extra wiring. Now I just need to find a power source...

Ok, I found my power source, I hooked up directly to a usb cable and the switch works great. Now I need to find a housing for it.

Yes, I do ALL soldering before assembling inside the box because it gives me more room to solder without melting the box. I can also test that the electric part is right before gluing anything down.

so, am i the only that can't get this to work? i've tried both ways illustrated in Nico's pic of the DC jack, with two different jacks, and neither has proven successful. both times i've ultimately just traded it out for an OEM connector instead, but would love to figure out what i'm doing wrong. i've gotten the phone jack to work as an 801 connector & have successfully made a 510 connector out of a bronze bushing, but this business has got me stumped.

You need to dremel down the threads so that center post is roughly flush with the top of them, but it'll still look bad compared to an OEM one, and OEMs can be had for cheaper than radioshack wants these days.

thanks nerf. and yeah, i've noticed that on my last few trips to the Shack. s'only 30 cents more to just get an OEM--and it's hassle free and looks nicer for sure.
