The diode idea is: allowing charge current in while only the switch lets battery current out. A reasonable idea but would drop the voltage perhaps 0.2v The diode would be connected so that with the atty attached, the diode is 'off'; it is connected 'in reverse' with the positive end facing the connector, not the positive of the battery. If you connect it the wrong way around, the atty will be on all the time once attached, so careful and reverse if wrong first time. The negative end of a diode is marked with a line around the body.
Just tape down the button is the simplest, and best, thing to do. Why worry, there's no atty attached and it's equivalent to the automatic battery being charged.
But make sure you have no shorts in your wiring and that the tiny circuit board is still attached and working before you leave the charging unattended (that tiny board has the battery's protection circuitry).
