Conversation with a smoker 2.9.14

As my HarmonyTown Chorus (Barbershop Harmony Society) was waiting to take the 'stage' at the Plymouth Library this afternoon, I was out in the smoking lounge enjoying a rare glimpse of sunshine while vaping my brains out & getting my thoughts ready for the performance.

A couple of ladies approaching the door and one said she was going to grab a quick smoke... AHA I thought, a chance to tryout my fledgling "what do you know about these e-cig things" conversation starter!

So I saunter over and holding out my "e-cig" (simple ego style battery & clearomizer tank), I asked, "what do you know about these e-cig things?"

Ellie (my soon-to-be-new-friend who shares the same name as my #1 granddaughter!) said not much but was curious & wanted to know more.

I hit her with some keypoints:
  • I tried my first ones because I was:
    • curious
    • Hoping to save $$ (even though I 'rolled' my own cigs, I wanted to save even more!)
  • Within a week, I had gone from 1 1/2 pack a day to just a couple of t-burners. I found myself reaching for the vapor thing a whole lot more.
  • That was the totally painless end of a 43 year long love/hate affair with tobacco!
  • My quitting happened by accident and with no intent! NOTE: I had never really tried to quit because I really really liked smoking - and had no plan to quit when it 'just happened'
  • Showed Ellie how it looked - she was impressed to see what appeared to be 'normal' cloud of 'smoke'. I assured her it felt every bit the same as hitting a tobacco cigarette
  • 99% less harmful than t-burners - mostly because nothing is getting burned - it's all about heating the simple ingredients in the liquid to create the vapor.

Ellie was excited to hear of my personal success and triumph, and that it for me was withdrawal symptom free, and wanted to know where to buy them.

And one last thing I put a strong emphasis on was where to learn more. For that, I told her to visit CASAA.org. and start her education there.

Ellie's response was everything I hope for when starting these conversations - stoked curiosity and excitement at the prospect of finding a way to a smoke-free life.

Ellie is my first attempt at conversation-starting with a smoker, and I count her as my #3 convert prospect!

By the way, Ellie was also part of one of the most enthusiastic audiences I have ever performed for in 25 years of Barbershopping!

All in all, a great way to spend an afternoon!
