Nicotine Determination

Posted 10-09-2009 at 04:23 AM by DVap
I wanted to update anybody who might be interested in having me do a nicotine determination on their e-liquid.

Awhile ago, I posted on the nicotine determination thread that I'd test e-liquid samples for anyone who might want to send me their liquid. The response was good, and I've been able to test numerous samples and have found that the procedure works very well and gives accurate results. I appreciate everyone who has helped me to put my procedure to the test by submitting their liquids.

Having demonstrated to my satisfaction that the procedure works, I'm sorry to announce that I'm no longer actively taking submissions of e-liquids for nicotine testing. There's a point where fun turns into work, and having done all the groundwork, I find myself too close to the line where testing samples for anyone interested becomes more work than fun.

To those suppliers who've trusted me to give a "quality check" on the liquids they sell, I'm still open to bartering supplies in exchange for the occasional test (here's where I find out if I just ran afoul of any EFC policies on services!) It's not a matter of playing favorites, there's simply more benefit for the membership at large packed into a tighter space to be able to say "So and so's liquid is on the money" than to wear myself out with individual end-user submissions.

And remember folks, it's no big secret. I've posted exactly how to do it for anyone inclined to set up their own determination kit.

I have tried your method only once before however instead of using a burette I used a 1cc syringe. My professors frown upon my love for syringes however I feel they allow for more accurate testing. I only use a burette if both my hands will be occupied doing something else, but even then I'm more inclined just to ask for someones help.

I often use a Hamilton precision syringe (1 mL/10 uL divisions) in a similar manner for low volume titrametric stuff. Good luck with the professors, don't forget they also hand out the grades.
