My brother in law sent me a text a few days ago, the text had a picture of the innokin VTR with a text below saying "What do you think about this?". Moments after his text, I gave him a call and we discussed the VTR extensively.
I asked him very simply "Why do you want the VTR?" and his answer was "Because I want something that's better than the MVP I currently use". This is when I really started thinking about the VTR and it's benefits and flaws for the first time since it's release.
I came to the realization while speaking to my brother in law that this device could be the worst of both novice and tenured vaping worlds. Yes, it's an upgrade to the MVP in terms of wattage, but only marginally.
The MVP V2 is capped at 11 watts, the VTR is only a 4 watt increase to 15. Apart from that one perk (Which is so minuet) and the fact that you can subohm down to 0.6 on the VTR as opposed to the MVP V2's cap of 0.8, I see no reason for anyone to want this device.
His argument was "But I don't want to do tube style battery mods like you, so this is a perfect upgrade for me because it's the same as the MVP where you can plug it in and use it without worry about buying those batteries."
Boom, I floored his entire desire for the mod by telling him he would need 18650 batteries like mine in order to run the thing.
That one point in itself should drive novice vapers away from the device, because if you aren't ready for that type of switch, this mod is obviously not for you. But there is a laundry list of things that makes this mod not worth purchasing, and let's go down that list.
Price: More than likely, you are going to be spending between $70-$80.00 for this setup. If you are looking to upgrade from your MVP, you can buy some of the best clones in the world with that price range, or an OKAY clone plus high AMP batteries and a charger and it will outperform the VTR by leaps and miles.
Weight: This thing weighs a ton. RipTrippers mentioned in his review that this thing outweighs his big blue Hana Box mod which takes 2 18650 batteries in it. I've held this monster and it's the heaviest mod i've ever held including most 26650 mods.
Atomizers: Innokin thought it was smart to design the VTR to where it could only hold certain Atomizers on it and force their customer's to use only tanks on it that were either Iclear's or the same size as the Iclear's. I'm going to assume this made sense in their minds to increase sales on their tank's, but to the community this simply looks like a giant flaw because in order for tenured vapers to use their RDA's and RBA"s on it (with the exception of the Aqua and a few others) they'd either have to saw off the Tank holder
Or get a giant ugly adapter connection is tall enough to make your RDA/RBA stand above the tank holder.
Wattage Cap: If Innokin were trying to build something that MVP customer's can upgrade to and not lose business on tube mods, why cap it out at 15 watts? Why not find a chipset capable of performing better. Hell, had Innokin found a board that could push to just 20-30 watts, it would have been more sought after than the two most popular high wattage box mods simply due to the price difference. Instead, they capped it at 15 which cripples tenured vapers from going near it due to our thought process, and here is that thought process.
If i'm going to buy a new mod, I'm going to make sure I have the best batteries for them, so i'm going to inevitably buy Sony VT4 or 5's, MNKE's or the Efest 35 amps for the mod (hypothetically if I didn't already have them), So Why would I buy a mod that can't utilize the power of the batteries i'm buying?
Coincidentally, the very next day I went to my favorite B&M, and while I was there a nice guy came in behind me holding a VTR as i'm talking to the owners and chatting with some folks there while testing out a few new clones they had in stock.
I noticed the guy who had the VTR was trying out some really nice tube mods and he seemed to know his mod knowledge. I was adjusting the center pin on the mod I was trying out to get my kayfun to fire on it. The VTR guy said "I have to do the same thing with my Nemmy clone when i'm switching from my IGO-W to my RBA".
I was now very intrigued to talk to this guy about the conversation I had with my brother in law. I said "Okay, so you own tube mods?" he replied "Yeah, i've got 2 in my truck actually" Then I asked him what he thinks of the VTR and he replied "It's okay. I mean, it doesn't perform like my Nemesis or anything, but it's okay". So i had to ask "I'm not trying to be rude, so please don't take it that way, but why spend $80.00 on that thing that doesn't allow you to use the tanks you want on it, and regulates you to 15 watts, when you have a set of mods capable of out performing it?". He politely said "I understand what you're saying" and said nothing else. As i'm fiddling with another mod, 5 minutes goes by and I see the nice gentlemen turn around and walk back outside. I said "Are you leaving already?" He replied "No, just going to change mods, i'll be right back". I humorlessly said "Was it something I said?" and he chuckled and said "Yep".
If he was that impressionable to my questions face to face, i'm curious to know if others that own the same mod have asked those same questions themselves.
