Lessons Learned Part 2

The biggest lesson I'm learning about vaping right now, is simply trying to find the right mix of components, juice mixtures, and power. Three simple variables that have turned into a mix of "how does this work" to "how do I get the results that I want".

I tried a 100% VG mixture yesterday and today. Originally I had planned to do this because I was looking for a bigger cloud. But, somewhere between posting in, and reading in the forums, I got sick. I was vaping a 50/50 mixture at the time, and thought it could have been a reaction to the PG. So, I got 100% VG, and vaped on that for awhile.

I like the smoother hit of the 100% vg, but man have I lost flavor. I was using a strawberry/banana flavor that was based on a 50/50 mix that I had run the day before. I can really tell a difference with the PG missing. Whereas I was at least tasting the strawberry in the 50/50, I can't taste it at all now.

I traced my illness back to basic human stupidity on my part. I didn't eat much on that day, and I didn't take in enough hydration. Problem solved, lesson learned.

Anyway...

A friend of mine has been giving me some advice that seems to run highly contrary to what I've been seeing on this forum. Instead of running a lower ohm coil, he's urging me to go higher. I think it has to do with going to the higher vg content. I can't remember what his exact reasoning was, but I can honestly say that running a lower ohm coil doesn't seem to have made that much of a difference in terms of flavor versus cloud. If anything, it seemed like I was frying juice more quickly on the lower ohm coils than the 2.5's I'm running right now... so, at the least there is something of merit to be considered.

It makes me wonder about the sub-ohm thing. Lots of people are doing this on custom builds now. It may just be my current setup, but I don't see how sub-ohming is going to give any significant benefit to my vaping. Of course, I'm still very much new to vaping, and still have much to learn. I'm sure that in time someone will be able to correct me on this in a way that I will more readily understand.

By biggest issue so far, has been burning the juice. Doesn't seem to matter what ohms I run at. The juice fries after a time, and it's really getting old. I've tried different coils, I've played with the wattage and voltage on my MVP, nothing seems to really alliviate this problem. It's probably the reason that I'm starting to prefer to cooler vapes now, while everyone else likes it warm.

My pursuit of bigger clouds has led to disappointments, but not the kind that I had expected. I've managed to get some decent cloud, just by going to a higher vg content. Really, this seems to be key with my limited setup. But I lose flavor this way, so... are bigger clouds really worth it? Jury's still deliberating that one your honor.

Seriously though, I think a lot of it has to do with my tank. Something about this Kanger Pro-Tank just leaves something to be desired. I get solid throat hit out of it, I get decent vape. But with burning issues, and flavor loss over the course of the day, I really wonder if I should reconsider an atomizer. I am at the least, looking in a carto-tank set up. Some people swear by these.

My next step, after the tank issue is solved, is to look into DIY juices. Given what I'm spending now, and my propensity to experiment with food, it's a logical progression. Sometime after, when I've found a few mixes that I like, I'll look at RBA probably, although I'm really turned on by the BilletBox right now. That might be as far as I go with RBA, or I may do something else.

When I started vaping, it was for the need to quit smoking. I never expected it to turn into such an expansive thing as it has. I won't call it a hobby, but it's definitely caused me to rethink my attitude on the subject.

Cheers all, and happy vaping!

BTW, I just got signed up with WordPress. As I'm in the process of figuring this out, I'm gonna start doing more blogging over there. I'll be discussing Vape, of course, but there will some other interesting topics eventually.:vapor:

The reason people go sub ohm is to get more power without using higher voltage.

Instead of going sub ohm, one can just use higher voltage.

That's kind of what I'm discovering after reading a few tidbits about Ohm's Law. I'm still wrapping my head around the idea of something smaller equaling something greater, but I think I get the general idea.

Seems to me though that using higher voltage would lead to more power consumption. Couldn't that fry a battery? I suppose that's why everyone is so adamant about being careful when building your own mods.

BTW, just switched to a low-end cartotank (my first one), and I'm liking it a lot better than my PT II so far. A bit more headache involved with getting it primed and sometimes flooding, but otherwise worth the effort. This'll probably be my set up of choice till I can get a better cartotank. I don't see a huge difference in vapor output, but I wasn't looking for that anyway. The flavors come through with more of a crispness than I anticipated. I love it.
