Gosh, I hope they tackle one of the biggest offenders of flavoring. Pharmaceutical companies, not only do they put flavoring into almost all children's liquid medicine, it must be low quality because it tastes like crap. Least we forget about Gummy bear vitamins and all of the overdoses those have caused?

These are actually allowed to be marketed to kids, cartoon characters, and wonderful flavorings. Yet no ban in NYC?

Yeah. I like your idea, but I think the 'iron poisoning' scare was another case of being just that, a scare.

Yes, you can be poisoned from elemental iron, even a 45lb child needs quite a bit to start to feel the toxic effects... say something around 2000mg at the absolute lowest end without having some sort of special condition to exacerbate the issue. Before things get 'serious' they would need about 5x that much. I'm basing this on a 45lb child... that's one between 3-4 years old(ish). I went to check how much Iron was in the various childrens vitamin bottles I have... 0. There isn't even enough Vit E in one of the bottles to become toxic in either of my boys if they each ate an entire bottle.

So... before I rant to long... I get your point and I love your enthusiasm! But...
In 2008, there were nearly 51,000 calls made to poison control centers nationwide reporting children under the age of 6 overdosing on vitamins, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

That actually just says there were 51,000 cases of adults SMART enough to call poison control, but NOT SMART enough to keep the vitamins safely secured. It does NOT say how many of those kids died or were seriously injured OR how many ACTUALLY had any type of poisoning NOR does it even say that the calls were regarding KIDS vitamins. The article is mostly a made up story/scenario. I have a better scenario, the child get's in to that same cabinet and OD's on Mom or Dads painkillers, takes a nap and never wakes up or simply walks outside and gets hit by a car. The caregiver in the story wouldn't even discover this for who knows how long since they weren't paying attention to the kid anyway (based on the ?article?).

So...
But even one adult prenatal vitamin with iron can kill a child.
Yup, sadly true. An ADULT PRENATAL vitamin with all that ADDED iron can definitely kill a child, depends on the amount of elemental iron (or other) in ratio to the childs mass (not actually related to amount of fat, etc). Heck, if we include choking hazards, 1 of anything about the size of an adult vitamin can kill children and adults alike.

Anyway...
I get your point and I love your enthusiasm! But I think the story was either written with an agenda, or just being used to scare parents in to doing something they should already be doing... taking good care of their children by not leaving things like vitamins within reach.

I'm all for parents taking responsibility for their children and themselves!

The whole idea of banning flavored juice is ridiculous from the start as most of this (*&^%$ is.
No candy that looks like cigarettes... no toys that looks like cigarettes or cigars etc... but toy guns, knives, etc... oh, those are fine. Various toys and games that are for little more than exercising the demons of crime, those are OK. I have an idea, let's just put age restrictive labels on the games... that will stop them from getting in to the kids hands... yeah, great idea gov.

Mind you, I have no issue with toy guns etc. It's my belief that children are completely capable of being taught the dangers of weapons without needing to first be hurt by one. When someone takes responsibility and RAISES their children, great things are possible. We all suffer the outcome when people let the streets raise their children...
