Diabetics Beware!

Psych! The scary headline is just me being bad.

From everything I've read, only a very tiny fraction of diabetics notice a "spike" in blood sugar levels as a result of inhaling propylene glycol.

The chances are very small that either you or I will be one of them, and if we are, there's a solution. No really. It's a whole nother solution, called vegetable glycerine, and there are people here who can tell you all about it and how you can fool with the proportions of each and work out the mix that pleases your persnickety pancreas.

This is probably a good place to note that Smart Shaman is not an expert on e-cigarettes. In fact, I have probably read, in the few weeks I've been here, more on the subject than she has.

She is, however, a Leading Expert on how much she wants my blood sugar levels to stay level, so when I waxed all starry-eyed about the people who, after their first e-cigarette, dumped their tobacco ones in the dumpster and never looked back, she gently informed me that those people probably get to eat chocolate eclairs, too.

As with anything that has the potential to impact our blood glucose levels, diabetics have to "watch it."

For me, that means that Smart Shaman wants to see a hefty chunk of fasting post propylene glycol-ingestion numbers before I start inhaling it all day, so any needed adjustments can be made.

And frankly, while I did instantly enjoy my very first e-cigarette practice, after a while, I did want my Marlboros, and I didn't try to see how long I could force myself to NOT have one, for two reasons.

One, Smart Shaman recommends that I avoid letting it even get to the point of a "craving," because I'm wading into such unknown nicotine level waters, and don't want to disturb them.

Two, I know that to maximize my chances of success, it's imperative that e-cigarette use be a pleasant experience, with pleasant associations. If I try to turn it into an endurance contest, or let my neurons get it linked up with being deprived of something, I'm sabotaging myself.

My intention is to stop smoking cigarettes, not to prove how much willpower I have, or to test my self-control.

That either has jackpoop to do with addiction is a cultural falsehood right up there with girls can't play chess.
