I shall tell you what you're doing wrong, you're letting the cart go dry. When the cart goes dry the material thats used for the filler burns when it comes into contact with the atomizer causing that awful nutty taste that will burn you're throat. The solution, change out you're carts more often, or top up every few drags (thats what i do and it seems to work for me.) To get rid of that awful taste on the atomizer you're gona have to give it a good clean. I'll tell you what I did but you might want to do you're own research before trying it. Put the atomizer in a shot glass, soak it in either white vinegar or coke which ever I had access to. 2-3 hours later i dump that stuff, give the atomizer a little rinse, and then i boil up some water and put it in the shot glass with the atomizer and let it sit till the water goes cold. Then dry the atomizer out by letting it sit coil end down over night, give it a little blow at the battery end to make sure there's no water coming out, if so let it dry a little while longer. When its dry, drop 3-4 drops of e liquid around the atomizer's coil to prime, it and you're good to go. Put the new atomizer on take a couple of primer puffs and it ought to be working again, without that awful taste, but in the end there's no guarantee this method won't kill you're atomizer, so do you're research. :)

I've had a lot of success with denture cleaner myself. It seems to get rid of ALL residue on both atty and carts. Let it dry overnight, and it's good to go again with no attached memories of whatever was vaped through it before. I don't use the minty denture cleaner, and I rinse it thoroughly before setting it out to dry.

But yeah, the burning taste is definitely the dry cart syndrome. At a minimum, I make sure to keep both a spare battery and extra juice handy whenever I'm vaping.
