A Tip for Bloggers Who Use Firefox

I've been blogging reviews lately of the many bottles of juice I received from winning a contest here on ECF. The last one I wrote was on Hazelnut Caramel Macchiato, by Top Vapor. It took me a couple hours to write a comprehensive review of roughly six paragraphs. The reason it took so long was because I suffer from a neurological learning disorder, which makes the act of writing a somewhat laborious task for me. I generally have to go back and edit the same paragraph several times, and often discover while doing this that I simply forgot to state the main point I was crafting the entire paragraph to lead up to. This problem doesn't just apply to blogs, it applies to anything I write. A relatively detailed email to a friend can take me hours to concoct. It's frustrating and difficult, but I love to write. That said, you won't see the review I mentioned at the beginning of this blog because just as I was finishing it, I hit the backspace button to edit something while my cursor was outside the text box. In Firefox, this makes the web page go back to the previous page. Which it did, completely wiping out my hours of work. If I wasn't disabled and could just knock out a huge blog in minutes, I probably wouldn't have cared so much. But I can't, so I did. I was furious and frustrated. Also, it wasn't the first time it's happened to me.
So later that night I was having a chat with a friend via email, and I remembered that my friend is quite the brilliant computer wiz, so I asked her if she knew a way to permanently disable that little hotkey shortcut in Firefox that makes the page go back when you accidentally hit the backspace key and your cursor is outside the text box, because it made me want to kill myself. Here's the response I so graciously got back (edited to exclude her hilarious commentary and snarky remarks about Firefox, which were very funny but not particularly helpful), which I present to anyone who's ever had this problem and wants it to stop:

Open a new window or tab in firefox and type about:config into the address bar. Say yes you'll be careful if it asks. Then in the search box at the top type "browser.back" which should reduce the long list of options to one, "browser.backspace_action" Double-click that and change the value to "2". Then restart your browser just to be on the safe side. You should find that you no longer can hit backspace to go back a page.

Understand that fiddling about with the about:config thing can mess up your browser, so be careful. Seriously, be careful.

I'll get around to rewriting the review of the Hazelnut Caramel Macchiato e-liquid sometime soon, which will also get the series of reviews I had planned back on schedule. I hope someone finds this helpful. If you have any questions regarding the procedure detailed above, your best bet is to follow the link below to the Firefox support page. Good luck!
