My First Foray Into DIY

I received my DIY kit Monday. In 48 hours, I have learned a lot about what to doand not to do when making my own flavors. Here are some of my more interesting observations:

1) Wear gloves while getting comfortable with the mixing routine.

2) Just because the flavors are tasty does not mean they are tasty in ultra-concentrated form. Your tongue will not thank you.

3) 20% of most PA flavors is approximately 4-15% too much.

4) Do not try mixing when you are already frustrated about something unless it is a recipe you already have recorded.

5) Do not over-tighten the nic juice bottle cap.

6) Since PG normally has to be ordered through the pharmacy, opt instead for 100% PG nic juice. VG is readily available OTC, and can be used to make lovely clouds of vapor while cutting the nic juice strength.

7) Make sure a flavor is very well liked before mixing even a 6 ml bottle.

8) Never, ever throw out an empty bottle or disliked mix, as it may be regretted later.

9) Keep a large pile of napkins or paper towels on hand.

10) Never do mixing while your house is a hotbed of activity. This is an activity best reserved for a very quiet time.

11) Record, record, record. Buy a book expressly for recipe calculations and observations, as well as for good vendor and website info.

12) Always give someone else a flavor you don't like. Not all flavors or taste buds are created equal.

I'm sure I will learn a lot more in the next few weeks. I have found that when mixed too strongly, coffee flavors are beyond unpalatable. Jamaican rum goes a long way. So do all the other flavors I have tried. I DO NOT like cherry. If I wanted cherry cough drops, I would have bought a bag of Luden's cherry drops. I will consider VERY carefully what flavors to order next.

I am finding that the flavors that hit the spot for me right now are all berry-related. I am digging those a lot more than I thought. My next order will include rose flavoring, as I have special plans for it. And I can't wait to make a bigger batch of the juice I made this morning and gave away to my sister!

Time to go clean bottles for reuse...
