Perfect Micro Coils Made easy

I haven't been happy with my coils. They were not bad but there were not as "good" as they could be.

I started thinking over the past few days and just let me mind digest on the idea.

If this method has been illustrated (which it most likely has) I apologize in advance but always like to share ideas related to a hobby.

Before we start this though:

Disclaimer: if you choose to try this this method of doing coils you do so at your own risk. This is basically a guide to how I did it. I claim no responsibility or liability if you do something which causes you harm. ECF claims no liability or responsibility. This being said you have been warned.

So to start with my basic idea is how to get a lathe effect while wrapping and maintaining clean tight coils especially on thicker gauge wire.

-What you will need:

-1 corded or cordless variable speed drill.
-1 1/16th sized drill bit
-Your Kanthal wire and some cutters
-A pair of pliers or lockable tweezers
-A steady hand and full use of motor functions.

-Step 1

-Cut off 2 as close to equal lengths (if doing dual wrap) or 1 length (for single coil) of wire...cut more than you will need within reason.
-put the wire or wires in a pair of pliers or lockable tweezers
-Bend the wires apart as illustrated above.

-Step 2

- edit:upon further testing as long as the 2 wires are close no need to twist them prior to wrapping around drill bit.

-Step 3

-Wrap the braided or single wire around the drill bit. Doesn't have to be nice just wrap it.

-Step 4

-Put the wrapped back end of the drill bit into the drill and hand tighten it. Don't go crazy and don't be too light. It just needs to anchor the wire. The drill bit will want to shift. It doesn't have to be perfect as your not drilling. Just keep it as close to true as possible while tightening and adjusting. It won't be perfect and it doesn't matter.

-Step 5

-Using a pair of pliers, channel locks, tweezers, ect...grab the wire (if doing dual in the single wrap keep the wires and tight and close together as possible while grabbing it no more than 2 inches from the bit at a time. If the 2 wires are not tight and touching you will have gaps even in a tight wrap. Take your time.)

-Keeping the drill standing on its battery on a flat working surface with one hand hold the pliers and keep it taunt with the other very lightly sqeeeeeeze the trill trigger till it just barely starts to move having it wind the coil at a very low speed so you can monitor it under good lighting. Wrap more then you will need as you can always unwrap after focusing on the coils tightness.

Once your done it will look like this on the drill.

bit taken out...the wrapped area will just be clipped off as I simply unwrapped a few of the extra wraps to get the length I will need to feed the wire in the RM2.
