Open or tightly wound coils and why?

I watch a lot of vids of folks building coils and wrapping wicks;some are tight and heat treated to stay that way and others are open and spaced properly to avoid hot spots. I know that the gauge of coil used and the length determine the resistance (OMS) but is this more of a personal preference or is it application specific? How do I determine what the right build should be?

trial and error my friend.....i have done almost every coil out there and i always try something that comes up new. I prefer my coils touching each other to give it an even glow. For me this provides the most vapor since the wick inside the coil is getting vaporized faster.
