Chew On This

 It's that time for me again. Wisdom tooth was killing me, which resulted in obsessively surfing the interwebz for home remedies.

Whenever I had tooth problems, I found that brushing with Ivory soap and rinsing with peroxide helped keep some of the pain at bay, and helped the antibiotics work better. I wasn't sure what it did to my teeth, though.

When I was a kid, I remember a teacher talking about how she ran out of toothpaste and had to use Ivory soap. She was saying how clean her mouth felt. It stuck to me because it sounded torturous, but intriguing (I was a strange child)
I tried it when I got home from school, and the stuff tasted awful, but it worked better than the coconut goop the dentist poured in a tray and stuck in my mouth! I used it when I had a hot date, or when I had a cold and had that icky taste in my mouth. I used regular toothpaste in between.

Now that I have problems with my wisdom tooth, I am back on the Ivory and was using peroxide on flare-ups, which is better now. But this time I searched "brushing teeth with Ivory soap" online, and read all positives, and discovered new things! I do "oil pulling" which is swishing coconut oil for 15 minutes first thing in the morning, then brushing. I also rinse with Dr. Bronner's peppermint liquid soap (Target). The peppermint soap is concentrated and really has to be diluted to use as a mouthwash.

I was browsing around the net to see if vaping would have anything to do with dental problems, and read that bleeding gums and tooth sensitivity are from quitting the stinkies. I have been vaping VG for two years, my teeth are whiter, but my gums were still bleeding, teeth were still sensitive, and I developed a new problem. I hate to sound gross, but my teeth started to stink when I flossed. Ewwww! What I linked on the top of the page is an example of what I was reading about brushing with bar soap, which lead me to question and, hopefully, answer.

I read that one of the main ingredients in toothpaste is glycerine. I read that it coats the teeth and prevents saliva from remineralizing the tooth enamel. I also read that bar soap kills germs, slowly knocks off tartar, and disinfects the pockets around the teeth. Makes sense. But I also vape VG, which would be a constant exposure to VG, but I cannot switch to PG, because I am sensitive to it, which lead me to brushing with Ivory soap, and rinsing with the Bronner's throughout the day. I brush with Ivory right before going to bed, to wash off any remaining glycerine, and my teeth can remineralize as I sleep. I wake up, my mouth is still in pretty good shape! The oil pulling pulls bacteria out of the teeth and gums, and remedies dry mouth.

I have been doing this for a few days now, and notice a vast improvement! My mouth feels squeaky clean, my gums aren't bleeding anymore, and I am no longer stinking up the bathroom when I floss! I have to keep up with this and see how it goes!

So anybody vaping VG and having dental issues, give this a try. Ivory soap takes some getting used to, I read Dial is better, but I don't have the stomach for it, and I read Dove has a better flavor, and just as effective. The oil pulling takes 15 minutes first thing in the morning, no coffee, no vaping, until a half hour afterwards, gotta let the teeth remeineralize, and the Dr. Bronner's after coffee time, meals, and snacks throughout the day. Heck, mix some with water in a squeeze bottle and keep it in your purse, car, or office to keep the breath fresh! Imagine what you will save on toothpaste, mouthwash, and cleanings at the dentist!

It is now Monday, went to the Dentist on Wednesday. He filled the wisdom tooth that was giving me problems before, and the filling was loosened, and food and bacteria was getting caught in there and causing the infection. Hence the tooth pain. He pulled the old filling out, cleaned the tooth, and re-filled it. He said as long as the tooth is still viable, and doesn't cause problems with the new filling, he doesn't want to pull it. That's fine with me :2cool:

I am still doing the oil pulling, brushing with Ivory (used to the taste now) and rinsing with the Bronner's. I must say, it has been over a week, and I have yet to feel plaque on my teeth! They really shine! My gums are pink, no bleeding. So far, so good!
