Default OT: Every Canadian Should Read This ASAP

Stop The Trap | OpenMedia International

Haven't been around in a while, (back on the analogs) but this is some pretty heavy stuff and I figured I'd share this with all my Canadian bros and bro-ettes on ECF. Soon your internet activity will be closely monitored. There's a petition on the site, it's probably the last chance we have on this matter.

Stop The Trap | OpenMedia International

    From the site:

You could have to pay a big fine for simply clicking on the wrong link.[/I]

Right now, a group of 600 industry lobbyist "advisors" and un-elected government trade representatives are scheming behind closed doors1,2 to craft an international agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).[/I]
Why the secrecy? We know from leaked documents3 that the TPP includes what amounts to an Internet trap that would:[/I]

    1. Criminalize4 some of your everyday use of the Internet,[/I]
    2. Force service providers to collect and hand over your private datawithout privacy safeguards5, and[/I]
    3. Give media conglomerates more power to fine you for Internet use,6remove online content—including entire websites—and eventerminate7 your access to the Internet.[/I]
    4. The TPP would create a parallel legal system of international tribunals that will undermine national sovereignty and allow conglomerates to sue countries for laws that infringe on their profits.[/I]

The TPP's Internet trap is secretive, extreme, and it could criminalize your daily use of the Internet. You could be fined for simply clicking on the wrong link. We deserve to know what will be blocked, what we and our families will be fined for.[/I]
If enough of us speak out now, we can force participating governments to come clean. Your signature will send a message to each country's leaders.8 Please sign the petition and share it with everyone you know >>>[/I]

Hope all is well with everyone on the forums. "Vape on" as they say. Peace.

The US & Canada should regulate the content that flows through it's ISP's. The internet is a shared network and easily accessible to children. I don't want my kids subjected to the crap that they can easily stumble upon. Let's face it, the real winners are porn sites. Combined they probably earn more revenue than that of many of the big guys. If the CRTC can regulate the way of which porn travels through my cable provider - why the hell can't they regulate it through the internet. I'm no way in favor of a communistic approach but the internet has become somewhat of an uncontrollable beast. 3rd party software can help like Netnanny etc but their basically garbage. Instead of ISP's forcing Canadians to pay for tier bandwidth, they should be locking all adult content & charge those who choose to use those sites. Can you imagine the horror a parent faces knowing their dead son or daughter's murder was taped & uploaded to the internet? Absolutely disgusting!

Just a view perspective from a concerned parent.

Porn? Methinks you didn't look into what this is about at all. This bill won't reduce the amount of porn on the internet at all. Here's a link to a background on the subject.

Oh, and thanks mods for moving this thread into a subforum completely unrelated to the subject matter where no Canadians will likely see it!

Yeah, this applies to downloaders of music and movies;the authors claimed intellectual property (with reason) ages ago.

Remember the Metallica drummer saga years ago? Same went with our locals.

I have no problems with the law per se as it is not right to be able to download stuff for free unless its purposely offered as such...which other means of countering this would you offer besides fines?

On the other hand,we all know that would open the doors for more tight control of our e-lives...keep voting for those douchebags.

I'll disagree with that, the last thing we need is more control on what we do, our society is based on freedoms that we take for granted, giving up our freedoms and letting the government control them for a little safety is not a good trade.

+10 internets to you good sir.

I can understand from a concerned parent's perspective, but I think it needs to be controlled by the end-user, not from the top down. The subject matter or your typical TV news broadcast is usually worse than 90% of the content on the internet - easier to hide the remote than ban the news.

Are these the same people that used to spoon feed us that milk, eggs and salt etc... was bad for us and then said they were good for us and then only in moderation?

The nanny state will only really screw over the remaining middle class and lessers in our society, but since that's roughly 80+% of us out there, I think it's yet another way to rope in the masses. Almost like the Colorado movie theatre shooting was a false flag to gain approval of the UN bill to effectively take all guns (or at least try) from law abiding citizens. The 2nd Amendment is at risk, the 1st Amendment is the next to take massive hits and I have a feeling this is only the start.
