Here's another datapoint: I called the customs person listed on my rejection slip (she was not in and I left a message) and said that I am from the US, because one of the exceptions is for "a resident of a foreign country while a visitor in Canada." Today she called and said to fax or email a scan of my US passport or driver's license and they would release my shipment. I know this doesn't help any Canadians, but it is interesting, nonetheless.

Perhaps US citizens in Canada can receive orders for Canadian citizens.

That would probably work if they were shipments small enough so you could claim they were for personal use.

I wonder if there's some way to get the shipper to put on the declaration that it's going to a foreign visitor in Canada somehow? Because my order sat in Customs for over a month before they sent the letter and you wouldn't want to go through that every time.

Maybe you could check with customs and see they could mark it in their database so any stopped shipments would be passed through for you.

I'm going to ask them. Will report what they say. Hmmm...this gives me other nefarious ideas....

Like, how do they know where I live? What if I ordered something and put, for instance, your address on it?

Now I'm scrambling to think of an American friend that lives here!!
D, so interesting that you found out all about this - and do love that you seem to be staying so calm in your dealings with the custom agent ! I'd have been so stressed out..
