Ok, I'm going to try vinegar. 'banjo', didn't you say apple cider vinegar had the same makeup as distilled white? If so I have plenty of apple cider around.

Next up to test might be lemon juice or baking soda. I wonder if baking soda+vinegar would be good? Isn't that what kids use in paper mache volcano's to get the foaming action? That might be like scrubbing bubbles

The web page I read said that apple cider vinegar and white distilled were both pretty even acidity wise. You might check your bottle to see if it's marked... the distilled white I picked up today says "deluted with water to 5% acidity". The only potential problem I see with the apple cider stuff is if it contains any sugars that might "stick" to the wick. I notice they don't recommend it for running through coffee makers.

If you do the baking soda+vinegar thing and get a cool reaction make sure to do a video.

You might be right. If we find good ways to make these things last they'll probably start making them to burn out quicker.

I think you nailed it when you said that “everyone’s gunk is not the same”. Depending on what the gunk is made up of (unvaporized sweeteners, colorings, flavoring and or carbonized compounds) will dictate how well the acid in the Vinegar works to dissolve them.

I would also guess that gunk formed by PV of higher voltage would be harder to dissolve.

“Vinegar makes sales people crazy and is most unlucky for our fortune.”

You can buy Vinegar with much higher acidity than 5% but you might have to search for it. 5% is what is sold in most stores because most people use Vinegar in food preparation and not as a solvent.

My apple cider says the same, 'diluted w/ 5% acidity'. You raise a valid point about sugar so I may try the white instead. I'll let you know when I try the baking soda+vinegar, yes.

When ever I want something “High Strength”, I also look in the same place. Down on the Farm.

Check out this Vinegar at 20% acidity.

Nature's Guide Horticultural Vinegar at MarshallGrain.com

If it will kill stubborn weeds it might even dissolve the gunk in Br’s cartos? That or remove the vinyl wrap or loosen the hot glue seals.

the lowest PH (most acidic) stuff you'll find in your home is lemon juice, much lower than vinegar

Yea you might want to clean ALL of them! I pulled apart a brand new one to add a strand of wick like I always do and I saw part of the wick was yellow. So I pulled it up out and about two inches of the end of the wick was yellowed and stiff like it was dipped in varnish. I did a hot water rinse and PGA rinse...filled it up and it was freaking nasty! That was a first for me...the wicks are usually clean and pure white.

So I open another one...pull it apart and the filler plug looked like it was shoved down the bore of a gun as a cleaning swab..it was grey all around the side where it meets the metal tube. Evidently they never cleaned the tube or something. So I did a hot water rinse and PGA rinse...filled it up and it had a slight metallic taste but was bearable.

These were new cartos with no primer and the yellow was definitely not primer or juice...it was acrid tasting. I am going to check every dang one of these things and clean and sterilize with alcohol. Maybe they should just send us all the parts in a kit so we can do it ourselves.

Has anyone else found a stiff yellow wick before?
................I found a solution that may be bad for one of both of us..............
