I think I'm at least close to the desired result. I'm using a 501 cartridge and after wrapping the filler with the spring and pushing the spring down it got stuck behind the flaps in the cartridge so I cannot remove it. It does seem to give a more consistent vape. Maybe I can find a thinner spring that won't jam when i push it down.
I would try not wrapping or compressing the spring. Try cutting the spring to about half (or a bit more) the length of the cart, drop it in and fill the rest with your poly/filler. Working very well with my dinky 401 carts.

Yeh, that does seem to work alot better, but I may still need to trim the spring a tiny bit more

    Thumbs up carts

I use the blue foam sleeve from a fish aquairium and cut it 1/2 inch buy 1/2 inch, flatten it with your fingers while clamping it from the side with a small pair of hemos, put 6 or 7 drops of fluid in bottom of cart then insert foam, unclamlp hemos, pull up or push down so its level with top of cart, top off with more fluid till wet not puddled insert cart and a great vape and long lasting and takes fluid well when vapeing slows.

i am having a great success with this so far. i actually got creative and used foam from a foam paint brush and cut a small piece and stuffed it above the spring where it covered the spring just a little and filled the cartridge only about 1/4 of the way. i was wondering though if anyone knows where to get these little springs by themselves? you know without having to find a bunch of pens to tear apart lol

Here's my take on the situation:

Just gave it a run and it vaped the cart dry without breaking a sweat. I was worried about surface tension keeping liquid within the spring, but it seems to be a non-issue. Just have to get the refill amount right, I've flooded my atty at the moment. Could have something to do with the elasticity of the foam I'm using (from one of those two-sided kitchen scourers), it has kept the indent of the atty bridge in it and might be letting liquid come around the sides.

edit: done this to 3 of my carts now, all vaping to the last drop with good flavour over the last 24 hours. Might stick with this until someone finds something that performs as well which can be filled without removing anything. When I pull the spring to refill, I notice that the last little bit of liquid (maybe 1/8 of a drop?) left sits right in the middle of the foam just above the spring, the rest of the foam is sucked dry.

I'm new here so I guess I resuscitate this thread with bad news....prolly already mentioned but um......need to be sure you're not using zinc coated springs. Zinc gives off toxic gas when heated. How to tell? *shrugs* From what I've seen of zinc coatings they kind of have a bluish tint compared to something like stainless steel.

Excellent mod, first one I've tried and found it a big improvement over unmodded 510 cart. Thanks

As to springs..I only had one pen I could cannibalize, so I went on a spring hunt. What did I find? Hmm, my old clipper lighter (won't be needing that again ) Removed the spring from the flint holder and used that

It's a very fine spring and will slide into a 510 cart without touching the sides. Easiest way I found to use it was to fold it in half, without kinking, and sliding it in to the cart "ends" first. The "bend" end sits just high enough to support a piece of foam.

Works a treat, and no cutting involved. Might cut down on cart capacity a little (12 drops to fill) but that's not a major issue for me.
