Genuine Joye 510 flat tip carts will have the ledge. They have the elongated "O" shaped opening. Vents on both sides.

SLB 901 flat tip carts (whistle tips) do NOT have a ledge, and they had a "D" shaped opening. Vent only on one side.

The SLB 901 carts hold more liquid than the 510 flat tip carts, and the tip is substantially "thinner".

    Hope this helps.

What you need to do is get some 901 carts (like from Rob at Vaporkings) and use them on your 510 attys.... it's a wonderful combo.

I dunno, eclypse. I just received in the mail some 510 carts that have what I think people are describing as a "whistle tip" that do not have a shelf. The carts that came with my 901 (which I shelved as I prefer the 510) have a flatter tip, like a Swisher Sweet cigarillo.

I cut up a drinking straw, per kristin's instructions a few weeks back, and added it to the whistle tip - works just fine holding up a blue foam plug ( I cut the straw too long to accomodate a slug), plenty of vapor and a good-feeling draw. The whistle tip is a little longer than the round tip and I was able to drip the same 10 drops to fill it up even with the straw undoubtably displacing some liquid.

I'll probably stick with the round tips as I don't mind the shape - after 37 years with analogs my lips are used to it! The disadvantage to the whistle tips, for me, is that if you line the cart up properly with the white base at bottom of the atty, which you've proven to be the right thing to do, the manual switch on the batt is in an awkward position in relation to the flat part of the "whistle." Because the batt screws into the atty where it will, you don't get to choose where you want the manual switch.

I'll be interested to read what you get with your order and how you deal with it.

Just thought I would post my update. I have started using a single larger stirring straw in my carts. The blue marineland type u foam seems to loose it's spring tension after a while. I have cut the straw to make it flush with the air vents indentions. It provides better support for the foam. I am also experimenting with Kristin's facial pads . They hold their shape much better and wick better for my Prodigy at 5 volts..

I use only the round tip stock carts on my 510. The plug and reservior cart idea is much superior to anything else I have tried. I also use a juice bottle with a 1" needle to fill the reservior without disturbing the plug.

Thanks for the info K Lady.. Forgot all about that prob with not being able to line up the flat tip with the manual button.. Crappy. Yeah i've got some big lips and never had a prob with them.. Infact with my 20 years of smoking, i never crushed my filters either.. so round is all good.. Just wanted to see if i could get the mod working on them to let others no as all this time i've been telling people no flat tip carts.

The facial pads and a straw sounds to complicated for mainstream users. Die hard DIY sure.. but i'm surely not complaining about my slug heh. Never had a prob with the plug either. In fact i've been so happy with everything i have not felt the need to fiddle with my mods atm. I'll see how it is when i try some HV.

Long time lurker, first time posting. First off, I have to say you guys are great. I'm in the process of ending a 20 yr. habit and doing just fine with my 510.

I actually went out and got the blue foam before my e-cig even arrived, and it works SO much better than the stock cartridges. Unfortunately (or maybe not so), my kit came with the whistle-tip carts, and thus didn't have the ledge that been described here. No problem...I simply pulled out one of the soaked but useless filler and cut the foam to roughly the same size--a little narrower on one end if anything to make it easier to insert. Then I filled the empty cart with juice, nearly to the top, slid the foam in and used a tweezers to dunk it into the juice fully, then tugged it out so it was flush with the end of the cart and viola...works like a champ. The material is porous enough that it doesn't displace the juice, causing overflow, yet it still wicks for a good long time and I haven't noticed any leaks to speak of.

Bottom line is that it is a vast improvement over the original equipment and had I not come across this forum, I probably wouldn't have vaped for very long. Now I'm sold. Not missing cigs at all, and it's kind of cool that this has become somewhat of a hobby, rather than just a nasty habit. Thanks again.

Thanks for coming out of the shadows and sharing!

Your method is just like this mod Eheim filterpad mod

I never had any luck with the original full foam cart mod. Worked simular to poly.. nice first 4 hits and then down hill. The filler would be too thick and hold alot of juice and not wicking good.

If a little plug will hold the juice, no reason to waste by filling up the whole cart. Try adding a straw standing in the cart about a 1/4 inch down.. though you may want to get a good measurement of how far down the atty bridge is first. Cut a V at the bottom of the straw in a ^ shape so it wont trap any juice in and around the straw in the juice chamber. Insert "The Slug" after filling the cart almost to the top. Vape away.

Though you may want to look in Reservoir Straw & Plug Mod (RSP Mod) for better ideas on how to cut the straw.

I'll be going down that road with the 801 soon.. unless i find something better, thogh the straw would seem easy enough.

    Blue Foam variation

    OK – I too had a post go poof… WTF…

I have tried a variation with the blue foam (Marineland Rite-Size U Bonded Foam Sleeve; aka - Eheim filterpad, aka - blue reticulated foam) for 510 carts…

(I apparently do not have enough seniority to attach files yet, I have a PDF with illustrations and pictures…)

I cut the 1/4” (6.35 mm) thick foam as follows:

    Initial rectangular cut – 10mm X 25mm

Then I cut the lower portion of the rectangle into a point:
    - staring at a point 7 mm from the top, along the 25 mm side
    - angle cut to a point at the center of the 10 mm bottom.

(tried a very crude illustration trying to use keyboard characters, but the post automatically removes extra spaces - geez... )

The opening of a 510 cart (where it meets the atty) has the following dimensions:

    - rounded portion to rounded portion – 7 mm long
    - flat side to flat side – 5 mm wide
    - top to the lipped edge inside – 7 mm deep
(hence starting the taper cut at 7 mm)

Insert the point into the cart opening; using a straightened paperclip, work it in until the point is at the ‘bottom’ of the cart liquid cavity. This will require compressing the foam near the top – this creates the ‘seal’ to prevent from leaking.

The top portion of the final cut foam (the rectangle portion prior to the taper) is:
    - 10 mm – which gets compressed into the 7 mm long portion of the cart
    BY
    - 6.35 mm - which gets compressed into the 5 mm wide portion of the cart
    BY
    - 7 mm – the depth of the inside ‘edge’
Then it tapers to a point at 25 mm, which is the overall depth of the cart tank.

The taper serves a couple of purposes:
    - supports the foam against the atty
    - wicks the liquid into the tank during filling; toward the atty during vaping

A one material variation (that is working well for me) of the ‘plug + spring (or straw)’ mod.

I can get 15-20 drops of a 50/50 VG/PG liquid into this (depending on the size of the drops) without having to remove the foam, don’t even have to push it to one side as I saw recommended somewhere. Just have patience while dripping.

Vapes strong right to the end.

A couple of times, out of curiosity, I removed the foam after vaping on it for a good, long time; pressed it between some paper towels – no liquid squeezed out. Also left the cart, open side down, on the paper for over an hour – again, no liquid. Seemed like it totally emptied it…

Still out of curiosity, I dripped 12 drops into the cart without the filler. Then I pushed the foam in – none of the liquid was pushed out. After I got the foam situated correctly, I was able to add 4 additional drops…

    Just my $0.02
