Brief update to note I'm still experimenting. I'm trying to extract tobacco flavor, to give vapor a more realistic taste. So far, I've got a refrigerator full of experimental liquid, all without much tobacco taste. How much nicotine is in there is anyone's guess. Yesterday, after reading still more about extracting flavors, I added a lot of salt to the cooking water covering a small pile of pipe tobacco. Salt is said to be a kind of catalyst for increasing the extraction of a desired flavor. And, actually, I think this new batch is an improvement (I say 'think' because I haven't had enough of a trial to form a firm conclusion). I put the final mix in an 8ml amber bottle with an eyedropper. The homebrew tobacco liquid was about 2ml. I added 4ml of vegetable glycerine. Then topped it with 2ml of Kahlua liquor to get some alcohol in the mix. Pretty good stuff. Adequate vapor, as usual. But not enough taste yet. When I get my Bickford's Kahlua, I'll use that instead of the glycerine and alcohol, and see how that tastes. I also tried making a batch by covering the tobacco with just glycerine, and cooking it in that. Didn't work for me. The glycerine is syrupy and instead of nicotine moving to the glycerine, the tobacco just absorbed the gooey liquid and didn't give it back. I now have a pile of wet tobacco drying on my porch table! I did pour some Kahlua liquor over the tobacco, but it evaporated quickly in the heat of cooking. This was a total failure -- and I ended up spilling the wet tobacco all over the kitchen counter. Rachael Ray, I ain't.

So salt water looks promising? Was there a salty taste to the mixture?

Not that I detected, but, on second thought, I think you're right. Understand here that I do snus, and snus are probably the single saltiest substance on the planet. Salt is an absorber and preserver and is the dominant taste of many snus. We snusers become used to it. Newcomers are always commenting on "wow, the salt taste, etc." So I'm not a good judge of this. Besides, of the four basic flavors -- sweet, bitter, sour, salty -- I only like sweet and salty! Heck, I salt watermelon!

I've just got to update. You know how a song gets stuck in your head? I've had "Nessum Dorma" playing for a week. Anyhow, that salty thing stuck. And I started tasting salt. Lots and lots of salt. I hadn't noticed until the post, but now I do believe that liquid might have come directly from the Great Salt Lake. Yes, I have a powerful salt aftertaste. Scratch one more failed idea!

Maybe not - what if you were to cut your salt usage in half? Or use something after you filter the tobacco out, like a couple of slices of potato in the liquid as you are simmering it - to remove the salt taste? Just a thought...

Yes, I think a little salt instead of alot might do the trick. Also, I hadn't heard of putting a potato in to absorb the salt, but that too, possibly in combination with less salt. The one thing I'm interested in doing (once my lab equipment arrives - only a few more days, says UPS) is making the solution, and then adding a bit of lime to the final mixture. I got this idea from that nico-crack article posted by TB. It says that acid aids the body in taking up nicotine. So I thought, let's try it. Also, I thought that it would somewhat counteract the sweetness of the propelyne glycol, and aid in creating a more savory smokey flavor. Also, I'll be experimenting with adding liquid smoke to the tobacco stock as well. We'll see.

I wish I had a video camera to show the vapor- it's a lot and it lasts a long time by dripping both the carts and the atomizer- I think the key to my vapor is that I'm using about 50% Glycerin, 50% PG for my main mix, which I then use about 80% of that PG/Glycerin mix to 20% of my cooked down tobacco juice- the only thing though is that this vapor does linger in the air a bit longer than normal prefilled Cart vapor does as it's got more glycerin which produces a bit heavier type vapor. I do have to double-draw, as it seems this mix requires a little bit hotter atomizer for a good vapor cloud though, but no big deal for me- just gotta keep batteries fairly fresh for a bit easier draw. Uncle- I had one do that on me too- I tried simmering it in water with a dab of baking soda, and that didn't seem to help, and I thought the atomizer was kaput- then for the hay of it I soaked it in hydrogen peroxide, rinsed, blew the excess out from the top, and it started workign quite well again after I primed it with some glycerin drops- not saying htis will work for yours, but it might be worth a last ditch effort try if nothign else works for ya. |

My goal is to e-smoke with no nicotine. Can I use the Bickford flavorings to top off my used cartridge and to drip smoke? Or do I need to mix the flavorings with water or glycerin or anything else? I need a recipe.
