I've never seen a black cartridge chamber, only black tips. Did it start off black or turn black from charring?

An hour? Yikes. I believe that a cleaning cycle should last 20 seconds, but I've never let mine go anywhere near that long. I shut it off before putting it down. If it goes into a cleaning cycle when its in my hand I just shut it down immediately.
That pic that Nikko posted is telling. It does get extremely hot.

I wonder how the vapor production would be if using a 510 atty?

That's just a standard one-piece 901 cart.

After measuring a CR2 battery it will be 9/16" or 5/8" it kinda falls in the middle, I am going to try a 9/16 to start with. If you reach your pinky finger inside you will feel the sides fall away, so you only have to bore down 3/8", so not very far. Should be a piece of cake to mod.
Hope this helps

Since then I got a replacement top (the piece with the button and where the atomizer screws on) and it has
NOT happened again, so apparently that problem has been fixed!
Just waiting for some rechargeable CR2 batteries now....

Well I have a V2 top and it will still cook down. Keep a real close eye on it.
