What to say.
I'd just like to see some examples of what most of you have said to people who either became interested while you vaped in public, or became the uniformed blinders to the world type who just wanted you to "not smoke here".
My e-cig isn't here yet, but I plan to use it in public. I have ideas of what to say to people, basically what I've been telling my friends now. Explaining the product, the nicotine solution, the benefits of the e-cigs and most importantly, or I would think so(for someone you might explain it to's sake), that the vapor has no odor and does not linger.
I like reading these public situations you all have, so lets see the actual speech you give people when you are confronted.
Think for yourself. Question authority.

I have a 'standard' email that I give people that lists the good and bad things about vaping, along with my recommendations on models, vendors, etc... I basically explain the parts of the e-cig, batter, switch (difference between automatic and manual), atomizer, cartridge and juice. I then go into debunking the claims made by some vendors on their websites on how one cartridge lasts you packs of cigarettes and so on. I personally recommend the DSE 901 above other models and then suggest that if they find they enjoy vaping that they look into a SD or magnum mod for extended battery life. I also have a standard recommendation for the average pack a day smoker to purchase a minimum of 3 starter kits and some back-up atomizers. I also keep business cards from vendors I use a lot with the web address to this forum and other sites I think are beneficial.

It's pretty rare that anyone ever even notices me vaping in public, and when they do the most I've gotten so far is a couple of strange looks.

I really only get strange looks from smokers. The smokers that know me ask about it (a silver cigarette with a blue ember kinda confuses some people LOL!)

Last Monday I had an early doctors appt, there are usually between 5 and 10 people waiting at the door when they open and some are smokers puffing on analogs. I stood in that group at least 15 minutes puffing away on my 901, not 1 person asked what I was doing. Even in the docs waiting room no one said anything or asked what I was doing although I did get a few weird looks. So far the only person who has asked was a cpl of weeks ago in the bike shop. Quote "what in the hell is that?", then I explained and told him where to get one. I got the impression I made a sale for the supplier I recommended.

I tell them it is an alternative to smoking I still get nicotine but no carcinogens.

When I go to bingo (every sat) I get people staring at me from all directions. When asked I tell them, that I had to quit cigs for health reasons and started using this alternative, and have been smoke free for 4 months. They usually love the idea and tell me how the patch or gum did not work for them. And they always ask me where to get them.

This morning I told my neighbour I was too poor to afford real cigarettes with tar until the recession is over.
To be fair I also gave him a supplier's business card, 'cos he is smoking 30 roll-ups per day and looking quite ill.

I say that it is really just a nicotine inhaler that acts like a cigarette and has helped me stop smoking.

Mini fog machine
Usually, I just tell people straight up it's an electronic cigarette. To sort of simplify my explanation, I tell them that it's basically a handheld fog machine or nebulizer, and that I can choose exactly how much nicotine I have in there and that, to date, it is generally accepted as non-carcinogenic and safe.
Usually works pretty well, and I have to stop rattling off a list of my favorite vendors, hehe.
