Just imagine someone shooting up with a syringe filled with saline solution. It is not an illegal drug but you can bet your ass they would throw you out no matter what.
Diabetics giving themselves an insulin shot, or someone having an allergic reaction taking a shot of epinephrine wouldn't be thrown out.
Its all about perception, always was, always will be.
Non-threatening, and not evil. Thats the goal.

Listen, we have to understand this is still new..Point blank, other customers might think it is a cigarette and the restaurant and either lose business or other customers might start lighting up real cigarettes..
If I was a non smoker I would not want to be around it either.

Thats why its important to talk about it
I used it at a restaurant in my town (very small town, they all are out this way in NJ
), I was showing it to the owner when talking about quitting (she's been bugging one of her employees to quit for a long time), some customers saw, and I talked to them about it too.
They loved it. Some of them were going to tell their wives/husbands about it, one was going to talk to her son about them. We even talked about the FDA and ASH. The common response? "What, are they trying to tax it or something? Thats so stupid this thing makes sense".
The more you talk about it, the more people know, the better off we all are.

Not going to beat up on Nico, sometimes you just gotta behave yourself, Dude.
What interests me more is the lack of comment about how tactless the manager was. It's his/her job to deal with the public, and the public comes in all sorts of different flavors and degrees of attitude. Working retail for 7 years, I probably would've ASKED him to refrain from using it in the store. I'd give him the reason being that he's going to make all the nasty smokers jealous, because up front and that close I'd be able to tell that he's not smoking a cigarette and it's not something I'd be familiar with. I might even have gotten a chuckle out of him. I would've asked him though, "What the heck is that?" then ask for a demostration, but outside the store.

Well, and another point for me personally, is that I STILL haven't been able to bring myself to vape anywhere that smoking wasn't legal in the last 20 years. I know that probably back in the day that people could smoke in supermarkets and stuff (someone confirm?) but if I can't remember every being able to smoke in a place, I haven't been able to bring myself to vape there.
I guess that it just doesn't feel right to me, even though I thought that I would do it. They recently made it where we can't smoke in bars through the whole state, but I will still vape in a bar as long as the bartenders are fine with it. But as everyone has said, places are private businesses and can do what they want. Even strip clubs can legally tell you that you can't come in there without a male companion if you are a female, just for being a female. And that's totally legal for them to do. (Has to do with coming in being a jealous girlfriend and starting crap) Point is, private businesses have a right to deny you for anything if they want. If they aren't cool with you, shop somewhere else or just put the PV away for the next 10 mins that you'll be in there.

As it was pointed out to me today, Nico has been having personal problems lately. Excuse him for his crazy actions please.

One problem with that statement Superstargoddess, the incident in this thread happened long before his 'other' issues commenced.

I was at a Chili's a couple weekends ago with some friends. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and food. I was using my PV and the bartender said with a smile, "What is that thing?" I showed him and expalined it to him. He said, "I don't think you can use that in here." To which I reply, "But, it's not really smoke. Nothing is burning." Him, "OK, but I still don't think that's allowed." A waitress passes by and he points it out to her. She confirms she has heard about them. He tells her he doesn't think they are "legal" to use there. She said, "Sure they are."
Moments later the regional manager, who just so happened to be there that day, approached me. He very politely asked me to explain to him what I was using and how it worked, noting that he was sure I was asked to do that a lot. I confirmed and proceeded to explain. He thanked me for explaining the device to him and he appreciated the fact that it helped me quit smoking. He also said he didn't have a problem with me using it there that day and wouldn't ask me to stop. But, he also stated that he would have to check with his Health and Welfare department to see what they think about it. His only concern was that other patrons might think it was a real cigarette and call in to report it. Then Chili's would get slapped with a fine.
Since then, I have been using an M403 with a blue LED. I have gotten some strange looks and even heard outbursts of laughter from across the room while I use it, but nobody assumes it's the real deal.
