The cigarette usually consists of a white or colored cylindrical tube with a brown filter and a red, glowing tip. The user inhales through a mouthpiece which triggers a sensor that switches on a small battery-powered heater. The heater then vaporizes the liquid nicotine and
propylene glycol, which produces mist. The user inhales the nicotine vapor into the lungs and when the user exhales, the excess cigarette-like "smoke" vapor from the
propylene glycol is then emitted from the end of the cigarette.
"My board is very concerned about potential health risks," Hopper said.
If the ordinance is passed, Hopper said, those who violate the law would be subject to fines. Businesses that don’t practice the law can be fined as well.
Karen Blumfeld, executive director of New Jersey Global Advisors of Smoke Free Policy, said
diethylene glycol is an ingredient in e-cigarettes that raises a red flag. She says the ingredient is used in anti-freeze and can trigger asthma.
