This is the first forum I've been a part of, so please excuse my ignorance. Why can't an OP mod their own thread? |

Giving the "general public" access to those tools on such a large public forum would be asking for a *lot* of trouble. The exception to this is moderator tools for certain specific sub-forums and user-groups.

So can members other than the OP also request something similar? Lu | |

I'd say leave it to the OP IMO

Sounds like "too much fixing" for something that is not broken?

Agree with Dohsma, OP's call only. If others have a problem with the thread going off topic they are always free to start their own strictly on topic thread on the subject and with the rule stated as it is now to expect it will then stay on topic at their request to keep it so from the start. There is really no reason to get the mods involved if the original poster is not concerned about it. Considering some of what seems to be the issues here lately, I think thats actually a better solution then calling a mod to slap someones wrist everytime we don't like where a thread wandered off to. Posters are just as capable of calling a mod in for a wandering post just for the drama that may cause for any number of reasons that may actually have nothing to do with their supposed inability to enjoy discussing a topic with those who are because others have wandered off the topic as well and if everyone has wandered off topic, well you can't really force them to discuss the orginal subject if they are done doing so, the thread will just die anyways. If their that serious about it, then it shouldn't be a big deal or inconvience for them to start their own strictly on topic thread about it. I think that in fact would cause less member/mod friction then the mods being called to jump in everytime someone doesn't like the turn of conversation in a thread they didn't even start. IMO anyways. Ilyanna |

i think the important issue here is if the post or OT post are reported then have the rule written to mention that fact and move on.

So maybe just add "If you are not the threads Op, then please feel free free to start your own strictly on topic thread about the subject, you do not need a moderators permission for this." To aviod the mods having to explain that everytime or feeling forced to get involved? - Ilyanna

The problem here is that politics is going to come up in these threads all the time. Our mission is a political one, and that means people are going to bring in a political perspective... and it's going to cause threads to go off topic... quickly. If political discussion is going to be considered off topic, then there should be a new area of the forum specifically for political discussions that people wanting to discuss it can be directed to.
