That was too complicated. Just give me one demerit to be safe.

now lets take the above line and add something to
"go away stupid fanboy's" that is an attack targeted to the whole group.
and even if you take the group out it still applies

not to be disagreeable, but imho it's still not an attack in that case. Like SurfMonkey said, far to subjective. To me, an attack would be more like "go back to suckling your mommy, you dumbass fanboy"

It has to be more specific or it'll lead to disputes and hard feelings. One person's mildly snide comment is another's rabid personal attack. If we over moderate this board we'll throw a wet blanket over it that drives posters away. A personal attack should be limited to things like:

"You're a ****ing idiot"

and

"Don't be such a douche"

Comments like "Hey, fanboys. Catch a clue." are NOT personal attacks.

Thanks, lordmage.

Another important distinction to keep in mind it this VERY common situation:

"That's an idiotic thing to say."

and

"You're an idiot."

The first one isn't a personal attack, IMO. A person can say something idiot without being an idiot. The second one is a direct personal attack. I've been on boards where the mods consider the first instance to be an attack, and it doesn't work out well. It's easy to broadly interpret statements like that... which leads to people getting reprimanded or banned unfairly. I think it's important to allow an opinionated and lively community. Unless attacks are directly aimed at specific individuals, not broad groups of people or towards post contents, they shouldn't be clamped down upon too hard. Otherwise you run the risk of sanitizing everything so much that no one has any fun and the board dies.

Surf,
i agree with you in theory so long as they quote the idiotic thing to say. and not just leave it blank so at least people who read the post can see what they are directly calling idiotic. other wise it is just a post count message in my option left there to simple up there count.

it dont necessarily add to the topic nor does it help either so it could be deleted as an off topic message without at least the quote like i said.

I think that's a fair distinction. It might not necessarily need quoted text if the referenced quote was directly above, but I see what you mean.

Mainly what I'm concerned about is a clamp down on lively discussion. A lot of times things can get heated. That's not always a bad thing. As in real life, people use strong language with each other. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as it doesn't cross the line. The issue we face here is figuring out where that line is. If the line is drawn too closely, it kills the board. If the line is too far away, it has the same effect.

It is a fine line for some Surf indeed---in over 3300 post that I have made on this board, I have never even thought about calling or refering to someone as an "idiot" or for that matter anything even close. A simple I do not agree or concur, or maybe a "I do not get it" is all that is needed. There is a way to get your point across without being disrespectful. Whenever I see posts using anything that is less then tactful and respectful, I move on. And saying it once makes the point---not repeating it in 6 posts going back and forth. That is my take on it, but then again that is just me.------Sun
