That's the thing, though. Different people have different styles. Some are going to use language that seems harsh to some and mild to others. That's the issue. I don't find it particularly problematic if someone says to me "that's idiotic" and I don't think anyone should be reprimanded for that. On the other hand, if someone says I'm a douche or a prick or something similar, I find that offensive. Again, it's VERY important to remember that your perspective isn't universal. Neither is mine. Everyone has different levels of toleration for language. That's why this stuff is so subjective. You can't make a blanket statement like "using the word 'idiot' is over the line." All statements need to be considered in context. Believe me. I've dealt with these issues before both as an admin/mod of boards and as a member of various communities. Trying to enforce tight standards leads to problems. I firmly believe that in most cases conflicts work themselves out without moderator intervention. The community will police itself much better than moderators can in most cases. I think it's important that mods only step in when things really get out of hand. Death threats, extremely harsh language, direct personal attacks. That sort of thing. Heated discussions should be allowed because they're what makes a board lively and interesting. Trying to put a tight lid on them will just make people more angry and drive members away.
