When I finally had to refill last night, I grabbed it with some tweezers Drew sent me (the kind that stay closed when not in use & you squeeze to open) so they hold the plug while I refilled the cart. Then I used the tweezers to put it right back in. I never even had to set the tweezers down - I kept them in the same hand which held the empty cart - no mess at all.

If you don't have those kind of tweezers, I highly recommend them!!
Thanks Kristen. I'll look up those tweezers. Sounds very handy

I have been using the blue filter material with this spring mod, combined with the straw mod... A+.

Finally have a cartridge that keeps up to the demand of my Prodigy.

I've been doing something similar to this with one cart for about a month now, since first reading about a nearly-identical mod in an older thread here on the forum. The difference in the way I've been doing it vs the OP's way is that I have the spring standing up inside the cart, so that one end touches the little wad/ball of filler material, the other end points toward my mouth. Given the right spring length, it will always keep the filler gently pressed against the mesh wick in the atomizer. (without pushing the filler completely out the end of the cart, which would be a mess when all the fluid behind it ran out...)

Several years ago I was a locksmith, and I still have some of the tools and parts. Most importantly to this post, I still have hundreds of tiny steel and brass springs, from 1/2" to 1" long, very thin, eminently compressible. (these are the springs that push the pins down against the key in most locks - for every 'cut' in your house key [usually 5-6] there is a stack of brass pins and a spring)

So with a small brass spring and a small wad of filler material, I get 12-14 drops of liquid in the cart, stuff the filler back in the top (removed and replaced either with tweezers or 'orapik traveler' steel dental pick) and then vape for 60-70 5-second puffs. Yes, more than once I've filled the cartridge then tallied a tick-mark for every puff, average is 64 puffs before noticing a need to refill.

With VG-based liquid it works perfectly almost every time, with PG-based liquid I sometimes get a little bit of leakage. (since I can't tolerate all-pg all the time, as it were, this isn't a problem for me, if it were I'd expect that more filler material wadded into the opening of the cart would be the fix)

I tried using the copper sponge as a filler and there is a threat in the section on cart mods, and my husband brought up the question and I did some research on it and there is a concern about heavy metal poisoning from the copper.

I tried it and it makes a great vertical spring/spiral that holds the poly plug very good, and even permits some movement to it, so it can eventually embrace the wick around the atty.

The copper spring inside the cart, does not, i repeat, does not occupy more than something like less than half of a drop.

    It is stable and clean.

My only problem with it, and with using the poly as a "Plug", is the density needed for the poly plug.

The more the atty is demanding, the less density the poly plug should get.

But then...density of poly and flow needed, vary according to many other parameters, like juice type and consistency, voltages, atty's age and consumption, and poly instant status (a fresh clean poly leaks more and quicker than a used one)

Those parameters are sometimes hard to guess and handle....but overall, it's a very good system.

Thanks to SCOTTYBALLS for bringing it up.

The only negative with using the vertical spring and the copper stuff is that it takes up more space in the liquid reservoir and you can't fill it as much then. The less material there is in the reservoir space, the more liquid you can put there and then less frequently you have to refill!

I'm wondering if anyone has tried using those little round screens you can buy at a head shop? You know the ones that go into a water bong/pipe?

No I don't smoke pot (anymore ), but I'd bet that if you cut one to size, opened up the mesh a bit and cozied it down in there, it would work great too. Same idea and I bet there are some folks here who might have them laying around

Scottyballs - Thank You for the idea of this mod. Tried it last night and it worked wonderfully. Made 3 other carts like it for other flavors, so I'll have to try them out today. Thanks again
