or "How to Quit Smoking".

With the idea of WTA rattling around the forum the last few weeks some very good ideas came up that perhaps have gotten buried in that long and fruitful thread. If you haven't read the thread it has gotten very long, but worth the read.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/for...-nicotine.html

It appears PV's have a failure rate of about 25% according to DVap , and perhaps another 25% that struggle to quit smoking (correct me if this is wrong please). It would be a good guess that for those that are struggling the long time failure rate will be on the high side. It's a good bet that a WTA based liquid would have a much higher success rate, but at the moment there is no WTA extract products on the market (and we don't know if there ever will be).

So what to do until we can get some. Perhaps a more pragmatic approach to quitting smoking using all the reduced harm products as needed would have a much higher success rate. The idea has been bantered about a good deal on the forum but now there is some sound science backing up the idea.

The quadrant idea that DVap came up with would be an excellent starting point.

Quote:

We can probably agree that nicotine is psychoactive and also variably addictive. We can also agree that tobacco MAOI's are psychoactive and also variably addictive.

The psychoactive character of both nicotine and MAOI's should be, IMO, considered beyond debate. Both do work in the brain to alter perception in one way or another.

It's the variably addictive character that makes things interesting.

Imagine a two-dimensional graph:

The x-axis represents a person's predisposition toward nicotine addiction, exclusive of any other factor. At the far left of the axis is "low predisposition", at the middle is "moderate predisposition", and at the far right is "high disposition".

The y-axis represents a person's predisposition toward tobacco MAIO addiction. At The bottom of the axis is "low predisposition", at the middle is "moderate predisposition", and at the top is "high disposition".

We could then define 4 quadrants, clockwise from the lower left.

Quadrant 1: Low nicotine predisposition, low MAOI presdispostion.
Quadrant 2: Low nicotine predisposition, high MAOI predisposition.
Quadrant 3: High nicotine predisposition, high MAIO predisposition.
Quadrant 4: High nicotine predisposition, low MAOI predisposition.

Accepting that each person smokes more or less for nicotine and more or less for MAOI's, how might individuals in each quadrant stop smoking tobacco in a most appropriate and satisfactory manner?

Individuals in quadrant 1 might be expected to do well vaping a low to moderate strength e-liquid as an alternate to smoking.

Individuals in quadrant 4 might be expected to do well will vaping a higher strength e-liquid as an alternate to smoking.

Individuals in quadrant 2 might be expected to have a fair deal of trouble with vaping alone as an alternate to smoking. These individuals might find satisfaction with a low to moderate strength e-liquid supplemented by snus.

Individuals in quadrant 3 might be expected to find vaping wholly unsatisfactory as an alternate to smoking. These individuals might find satisfaction with a higher strength e-liquid supplemented by snus.

It should be noted that since snus contains both nicotine and tobacco MAOI's, some individuals may find that they prefer snus to vaping, and quit vaping or smoking entirely. There appears to be a fair deal of anecdotal evidence for this in the snus community.

Don't quite know where this thread is going but I thought it might be a good idea to split off from the "Are we getting it thread" to explore ideas of what we can do in the here and now with the information we have. Perhaps a list of common problems that indicates that the purified type nicotine isn't working.

A few things I have observed that you may be missing the full range of alkaloids

Panic attacks
Higher then normal anxiety
Cognitive issues (a long list)

No doubt there are others. Perhaps with the new information on whole tobacco alkaloids we can put together a more effective way for people to quit smoking, and especially those for whom e-cig are not the whole answer.

Hi All,

I'm pretty new. Smoked my last analog on 11/4. I'm very disappointed because I expected I'd have some improvement in my sense of smell by now. But nope, still totally shot. For instance, my girlfriend got a bunch of free cologne and perfume samples, and even with the bottles right under my nose, I couldn't smell a thing. I have several flavors of e-liquid, and can hardly taste any difference between them.

Anyway, I'm curious to learn how long it took for you to start smelling and tasting normally. Did your senses return suddenly or gradually? Also, if you wouldn't mind, please say how much you used to smoke, and for how long.

Thanks!

"At or around this time, we made a healthy, informed, democratic decision to get back on drugs as soon as possible. It took about twelve hours."

Hello. The older-timers know me, for the new Vapers: I used to be here, vape and enjoy life without smoking, but then early this year my health forced me to do some things to keep going. One of them was quitting nicotine. Cold poultry. Success for the problems of that time, but...

I did give the ***dy abstinence a fair try. I was clear for 211 days. Suffered more or less the same amount of time. There were days I remembered to suffer only after several mid-morning hours (I never wake up early), but those were few. The depression, anxiety, general feeling of void in my life I tried to fill in vain by other things...

Well, I gave up. I made the aforementioned trainspotterīs decision last night. It did not take twelve hours, īcause I remembered a tin of snuff in an old rucksack. I went to search for the treasure silently, not to wake up the kids. I found an onion which must have been older than 211 days ;) in the īsack and an almost full tin of Gawith Apricot.

I slept like a baby without the sleeping pill. I feel better than... err... six months and some weeks.

Gods of healthy lifestyles forgive me my sins. And go screw up someone else, please :D

This was my first attempt since 1986 and the first one only lasted a month, beacause I was young and eager to live life fully. Now I am not young any more and eager to survive, if possible.

I still have not touched an analog, though. So my non-smokerīs sign remains true, what do you think?

BTW for those who are trying to quit tobacco cigarettes using the electric ones: I do not crave smoking. I almost never did through that half a year of sobriety. I liked the smell of someone else smoking, but the void in my life seem to be nicely filled with smokeless nicotine.

Those who feel like telling me I was a wimp because I did not persevere, you are free to. I am rather exhilarated by feeling good at last. Thinking of trying some of the newer e-cigs, too :sneaky:

(On the other hand, if my health goes rapid downhill after my reunion with my vice, I will probably try another abstinence/suffering spell... or maybe just die and get over it.)

I do not drink or do drugs, so nic was my main vice. After trying life without (also without animal fat and percolator coffee, leavened dough foods etc. for some time, rather strict diet) I think I will be very suspicious of people who do not smoke or drink or have some other habit. VERY suspicious :D

9 months with NO TOBACCO. 9 months with no cigs. For me I have totally forgotten what it is to light up anything. I think these e-cigs are great, I find them more satisfying, smoother, and tastier than the "real" cigs. I also reduced nic levels from 36 to 24 to 18, I will probably stop there because I like nic. I wish I could find easy solutions to other of lifes problems!

I used the BE 103 along with cigarettes for a month. Then i got the Joye 510 and have been using that with a few cigarettes a day for about two weeks. Today is day one with no cigarettes. I have been awake since 4 am and just using my Joye 510. It's going ok. I really hope these cravings go away. The hardest time for me is when i first wake up and right after i eat. I think if i can get past those times of the day, i should be able to quit cigarettes for good. Wish me luck. :)

here is my situation. My brother and I have been smoking for 20 years I came to this forum in may after seeing blue and SE advertisements all over the place..

I came here and spent countless hours reading, watching reviews and trying to find the best method to quit analogs.

in July I finally took the plunge and ordered a 901. I quit the next day. I learned the ins and outs of Vaping thanks to the wealth of info here on ECF.

My new discovery sent me on a buying spree and I ordered a 401, and a 510 and soon I was making my own mods..

My brother saw the benefits of PV's And I would let him try it out.. he raved about it so I decided to give him a new 510 kit with several bottles of juice.

he still smokes a pack of day and treats the PV as a toy..

so my theory is..

since he didn't pay or do any leg work for it he truly cant use it to quit.

Has anybody run into this situation and what did you do?

I got my 510 in the mail a month ago yesterday. I really wanted to quit, on many levels and for many reasons!

I was up to 2+packs a day and had been smoking for 39 years!

While waiting for my e-cig to arrive I read this forum daily and became more and more excited. I had tried quitting many times and even got to a six month anniversary on the gum...but well...you know. Reading about other peoples experiences with the e-cig gave me real hope after I had just about given up.

My e-cig arrived, I charged it up. I was too excited to wait the full 8 hours; didn't matter. After my first vape I thought, OMG! I can do this!

I didn't have a single analog the first week. I was like those who started vaping and never looked back. But that was the first week!

During my second week I was watching an old movie while vaping and a lady lit up a cigarette with a match and blew out the match...I can't explain why but that one action did me in!!! There was something so visceral about it! And I hadn't even used matches particularly for years. I went and bought a pack of analogs and asked for matches!

I admit, I enjoyed lighting my analog and blowing out the match. I enjoyed the smell of the sulfur and I enjoyed the smell of the analog. I DID NOT enjoy inhaling the analog particularly. But he was an old friend and there were some things about him that I missed. I couldn't quite finish the analog, I got dizzy.

I realize that quitting analogs is more than just replacing the nicotine and the inhaling with vapor. It is a whole relationship with the "bad boy"! And there are so many triggers!

My banner at the bottom is not exactly correct. I was smoke free for the first week but in reality I have just cut down - A WHOLE LOT! I have smoked a pack a week for the past 3 weeks. That is still pretty good for a 2+ pack a dayer!

The bottom line is, I'm not beating myself up over my pack a week. I have broken many automatic triggers and there are many more to go but I still say the e-cig has given me hope and I KNOW I will kick this habit and addiction with time!:)

withdrawal from MAOI in cigarettes?

I am having some strange symptoms. I am a 57 year old female with no known health problems, except for some wheezing that was attributed to smoking....

I am having some strange symptoms. I am a 57 year old female with no known health problems, except for some wheezing that was attributed to smoking. I am having some problems that I THINK are related to MAOI withdrawal from quitting smoking. I have been to 3 doctors (in a small area) and none seem willing to actually address the issue with me. Instead, they have me wearing a heart monitor and are doing a complete heart study. That is all well and good and I will continue the study, but I don't think that is the answer. I have had several EKGs all of which are normal. Blood work is normal. Lungs have cleared up since vaping.

I would like to discuss my particular situation with someone who is a doctor, and is knowledgeable in PV use. I am trying to do the research myself, but I don't have any medical knowledge. I think my problems might stem from MAOI withdrawal. Does anyone think that could be correct? Is there enough anti depressant in cigarettes (2PAD smoker) that cessation could be triggering withdrawal symptoms from the anti depressants?

My symptoms are consistent and occur sporadically:

Pounding heart
Rapid Pulse (last night ranged between high 90's to 120)
slight nausea
slight light headedness (this seems to be increasing)
uncomfortable feeling in legs
jerking
BM every time symptoms occur even though would not normally do so
Frequent urination - like every few minutes. I normally urinate quite a bit because I do drink a lot of water but this is more pronounced.
Elevated blood pressure (last night around 166/90)

I do NOT:
panic or halucinate
become disorientated
lose consciousness
stumble
have slurred speech
have an elevated body temperature

I had a particularly difficult time last night and had felt tired all day. I am not worried or upset about anything...until I get scared that I am having a heart attack or stroke! LOL

These bouts seem to come on each time I make a further reduction in cigarette intake. I still smoke 5-6 each day. On Tues., I didn't have a smoke at all until late afternoon. On Wed., I held it to 3 smokes until this happened around 10 PM. It seems to help if I smoke a cigarette and cover up with a blanket to get warm. Oh...I live in Florida, it is still hot here..92 right now. I have AC and keep my house around 77 degrees, so I know I am not cold.

Whew...sorry so long. I don't really know what else to do. My docs, 1 internist, 1 urgent care doc when internist couldn't see me and now a cardiologist, all seem to just blow me off when I try to discuss the problem. They don't seem to think it is related, but I think it might be. I know any responses are opinions only and I am not asking for an internet diagnosis. I would not substitute the comments for my doctors advice. I am just trying to figure out if I COULD be right and possibly get some suggestions on better information I could give to my doctor to find the problem. I don't mind the heart study...I just don't want to have a stroke while they are looking at the heart!

Thank you very much to anyone willing to respond!

For those of us that cannot manage to quit completely, maybe we need to figure out what is missing in vapor that we so crave from our smokes. I don't think it is just the nicotine. I have vaped enough nicotine to make me slightly sick and still want an analog.

Maybe one of the people on here that are vastly more educated in such things than I am could help me out. For instance, I know cigs contain mild anti-depressants. Could one sort of replace those by sipping an herbal tea...like a calming one? Is there something else that makes it so vary difficult for me to cut out those last 1-5 analogs I still smoke after more than 2 months of vaping? I have cut way back...from 1.5 - 2 packs per day, but I still cave and smoke those few every day. I don't like them, but I smoke them and then I reach for the PV because I do like that! Any help, anyone? :(
