I don't know much about this at all; but I do see on the dutch forums that people are told to search for (hmm, translation?) 'surgeons steel mesh' is the literal translation - I'm not sure if that would be the words you would find it under in reality, of course...

Well the original mesh does conduct electricity so I guess it doesn't have to be non-conductive.

it just has to hold the liquid like a sponge.. its metal (steel) because it might get hot..
its also quite compressed but i think thats more to do with how its crammed in the steel atomizer tube..
its starts the process and feeds the heater coil.. the cart just keeps the wire wool topped up and wet.. if there is a weakness in the system its the liquid not passing from the cart wool to the wire wool very quickly..
and as the cart empties the whole lot gets dryer.. basically the heater coil is fed with less liquid from a half empty cart than full one..
this wont bother a light user overly much but it will bother a heavy user.. hence the need for top ups and dripping.. for some at least..

ps... i think folks over complicate these things.. they are very crude and very simple.. and as long as they are cheap enough to replace often work well enough..
