Default Coughing When it Hits My Throat - What am I Doing Wrong?

Got the Joye 510 I ordered and I like it ...

One problem though. When the vapor hits my throat ... I cough. Keeps happening. I don't cough when I smoke real cigarettes, so can't figure this out. Is there a special technique I'm not getting?

    Regards
    Suzanne

Suzanne, there definitely is a learning curve to using e-cigs....so you may just need a little "break-in" period to get used to vaping. (Keeping in mind that the tobacco companies lace their cigarettes with lots of chemicals to make the smoke smooth when going down your throat)

However, the 510 may also not be the right model for you. As an example, my g/f likes the 901s I've had her try because it gives her plenty of throat hit and lots of good vapor and great flavor reproduction. However, it often makes her cough as soon as she inhales. There's no way she can handle a 510. I recently had her try an 8084 which has a much weaker throat hit and she enjoyed it better.

So, with that said, the lesson we learned for her was that we should consider a different model that doesn't hit her as hard in the throat. We also found that some flavors are harder for her to handle (throat-hit-wise) than other flavors.

What is it that you like about the 510? Perhaps you could find another model that wouldn't affect your throat as much.

Sorry for the long-windedness....hope it helps!

I bought two models ... the 510 and a 2-piece model. The 2-piece just doesn't seem to do anything for me. I believe there's less coughing, but also less everything ... less taste and even though the nicotine level is the same as the 510, it doesn't seem to satisfy me. A few times I've been able to inhale with the 510 without coughing and it was a very enjoyable hit. If I could just keep doing that, it would be perfect.

I just ordered a bunch of different flavors to experiment with. Right now all I have is flue cured tobacco flavor.

For the most part I get a similar reaction with most PG liquids (although there are some exceptions). VG liquids on the other hand rarely give me any trouble. Even 50-50 mixes (PG liquids cut with something like ECOpure Krystal) don't give me much grief.

If you have all PG liquids, can you add some Glycerin to make them smoother?

Yes.. VG (Vegetable Glycerin) like the Humco stuff should work fine (of course, that will reduce your effective nicotine content).

It could be a PG sensitivity, but more likely, you just need to get used to vaping. The vapor definitely has a tendency to irritate your throat when you first start using it, which can make you cough. Try to be a little more conscious about pulling the vapor slow and easy into your mouth rather than trying to smoke it like an analog.

What I do is pull the vapor into my mouth for a second or two, then start inhaling through my nose (while still sucking in vapor from the e-cig) so that it starts flowing gently to my lungs. Then I pull the e-cig away, take in a quick breath through my mouth and exhale. Seems to work well for me.
Smoke-free since Oct '09 thanks to ecigs!

I second that ^^^^^ Pull the drag into your mouth before inhaling it.

I went through the same thing when I started vaping.I was sure that vaping was not going to work for me because of the severe coughing.I tried several different models and several different kinds and strengths of juice.I just kept trying and finally after a couple of weeks the coughing just stopped and now I have been off of analogs for 18 days.

Trying that ... it has worked for me a few times without choking. Not much vapor in the exhale though. For some reason, I seem to be able to handle a much larger volume of regular smoke than this vapor. Granted, I have a lot more experience with smoke than I do with vapor.
