Default 1963's Electronic Cigarette

Believe it or not, there was a patent for the electronic cigarette dating back to the sixties!

And take a look! Does it resemble the beloved Pen Style or what?

Good find, Lacey. I guess it wasn't popular then because the dangers of smoking hadn't been publicized and analogs were still very inexpensive.

This is absolutely amazing. I can't believe someone had invented the electronic cigarette in l963. Looks like to me if they had added nicotine to it perhaps it would have been an electronic cigarettes. I wonder why they were never marketed.

Is this man still alive.

I have been doing research on this all morning!

First, his design made it into the 1966 Guinness Book of World Records!

And apparently, he took this idea to the Senate Commerce Committee in 1967. I am looking for the actual documentation on this.

What's also interesting is that in an 1992 patent Electrically-powered linear heating element - US Patent 5093894 Description by Philip Morris they state:

"Smoking devices employing heating elements made in accordance with the principles of the present invention have certain advantages over combustion-type smoking devices. For example, such non-burning smoking devices give the user the sensation and flavor of smoking without actually creating some of the smoke components associated with combustion. This may allow the consumers of non-burning devices to enjoy the use of this device in areas where conventional smoking would be prohibited; such areas could include restaurants, offices, and commercial aircraft."

So from this, it is safe to say that the known differences between combustion and vaporization have been KNOWN for a very long time and unfortunately, never made it to market for reasons I am still not sure of.

So the electronic cigarette is certainly not a new concept by any means and considering all of the "patent" talk that comes up as to who actually owns this concept, well, it appears that we've been there and done that.

The Reports of the Surgeon General: The 1964 Report on Smoking and Health

In 1964, the Surgeon General issued "Report on Smoking and Health". But it appears that they knew as early as the 30's that there was a relationship between health issues and smoking. Fascinating read
