Hey Hey, This is part one for the vent hole 510 mod
Here is the 510 cart mod tutorial. This is not a new mod, so I can't take credit for it. I haven't seen this done on a 510 only the 901. I hope its ok to post this in the 510 review thread, I figured it would be easier to find it not piled under tons of other mod threads, since it is about the 510.
Sorry for the small pics, and low quality this is the largest format the ecf takes. These are 3 attys that I have, the left one and the middle are Janty Dura C attys and the right is a generic 510. The bridges on the Duras are slightly wider and more rounded. They seem to perform and operate the same so far. The 510 ones the bridge seems to sit deeper in the cart and can possibly melt the edges. I will also so pics for this mod also towards the end after the vent hole mod. Note also that the atty on the far left has 8 days use on it. The other two are brand new and have never been used, just sizzle ckecked on a manual batt for a doa test.
Here are the tools you will need. I have hemostats, which work very well but needle nose or regular pliers will also work. You will need one cart to modify, and a lighter. (any kind will work) You will also need a standard straight pin or sewing needle works too. The sand paper is needed for a seperate mod I'll mention after this pinhole mod. Also you will need a paper clip with the end bent out to pull the cart inserts with.
First thing to do, is take the paper clip stick it in the hole, and remove the first insert. There are two of them in each 510 cart. Take your pliers and bend a 45 degree angle on the tip helps grab the insert better.
Although you do not have to remove the inner insert, go ahead and do so to get a good idea of how the back side of the filler cup looks. You should see the back flat side of the filler cup and the two slotted vent holes, where the vapor flows out to the tip of the cart.
This is what you should see with both inserts removed. This is where you are going to make your vent hole. I put mine in the middle, so when you assemble it back together you can clean the vent with your needle. Use a different needle because the one you burn through with will have melted plastic on it.
This is just part one of the tutorial, and I will post the next part to the thread when I get it composed.
Here is part 2, that includes how to make the vent hole and how to do the sandpaper mod to remedy the burnt plastic edges.
Take your needle hold it in the pliers, I will get very hot and burn your fingers if you try to hold it. You want to hold it over the flame till it gets red hot. Its harder to see the glow if you are in a brightly lit room.
While the needle is red hot, quickly apply the tip to the backside of the filler cup and burn all the way through to create a vent hole. If you hold it up the the light you should see a small hole. After the needle cools for a few secs clean it off or get a new needle and push it back through the hole to clear any debis.
This quick mod is for if your cart has a plastic taste and is melting on the end. Take a piece of sandpaper smoother the better and sand the end where you top off. I'd say sand off about 1/16" just enough to get it slighly away from the heat. The 510 plastic is very soft and should only take about 5 swipes to get the desired amount off. Take some scissors or a knife and shave off the jagged edges and shaggy parts so you dont vape them. Also do this with the cart filler removed.
This is still a work in progress and are many variations on hole size and hole position that might work better. I have seen another 510 cart mod doing the basic same thing but on the outside of the cart. This method seems to be better because allows the juice trap to still be effective.
For maximum wick effeciency it is best to change your cart filler every day or other day max. I seem to be gettin a slight better flavor and the vent allows the juice to fully saturate the cart alot better. A bag of polly filler is cheap and will last you forever, the newer the filler the better.
I hope this works for you, any suggestions or feedback is mucho welcome. Happy modding.
Wow, it certainly does drink up some juice quickly this way, no more waiting for it to absorb between drops. I must admit that it also seems to have more flavor but goes through the juice quicker on my 510. I have flooded my Janty so I will have to wait to try it on that one till tomorrow.
Thanks for the instructions.
Hehe yeah I get some flooding also, I've figured out today that this works best with brand new poly in the cart. So far the poly is only lasting me about 10 hours or so then it gets all matted up and is toast. When the poly gets old is when I have the flooding problems. I went to Small Mart and got the big bag of the 16 guage polly and I have been known to change it twice in a single day. The polly seems to be the single most factor in the performance of how it works. I thought my atty was giving up the ghost till I started rotating the polly more often. I haven't had good luck with the teabag/filter thing so I havent tried it with this mod.
It works kinda like a vent on a gas can. With the vent you get better liquid flow to your atomiser. It also makes topping off faster, cause the liquid absorbs into the filler faster also. It does tend to use a bit more juice.

Reason: crappy grammar
Thanks. That does make sense. I may try it on a cart and see what I think. It'll be a few days before I get around to trying it though.
Did want to mention to you that I had seen your suggestion on another thread and due to it and not yet really knowing what you meant by putting a hole in the cart, I did bore out the holes slightly that are in the cart already and it really made a big positive difference for me.
Before doing that the draw was so hard that it made my jaws sore sometimes. Now it's like pulling on a straw and I can 'feel' the performance of the atty so much better. This, I believe, is going to help me with the poor atty life that I have been experiencing.
Much appreciate the idea you gave me even though it wasn't the same thing you were talking about. It's all good.
Hope the mod works out for ya, I still haven't found the sweet spot for how much filler and juice yet. I really like your idea also, I'm gonna try that on a cart I have. I have read other post, can't remember who that drilled the two blocked off holes and converted an atty to the 4 hole version. I havent been brave enough to try this yet, can't find my dang tiny drillbits. I hear the 4 holes create an easier draw, but I'm not sure how this would affect the vapor volume and consistency.
