The USB power charges the batt only. The atty is then powered by the batt, which runs down a bit, and the usb charges it back up. Eventually you have to just let it sit overnight to fully recharge. Fully charged, you can unplug it and vape on it for a few hours, since the stock batts are around 350 mAh. Compare that to the standard 510 batt, which is 180 mAh, or the mega batt which is 280 mAh. You can get 10440 batts for the PT that claim 600 mAh, but they are generally 400 mAh or less, the label is wrong. This is not a ripoff, as most vendors of said batts are up front about this.

can you get protected batts for this?

Yes, but it seems the protection circuitry adds some length, making some not fix in the batt box, and the added protection may cause more issues than it is trying to protect against. The stock batts are generally not protected. Here are links for getting 10440s:
trustfire protected 10440 "600mah" rechargeable lithium-ion batteries 2 PCS 3.7v
DealExtreme: $4.23 Ultra Fire 10440 3.6V 500mAh 2Pack
I have several dealextreme (unprotected) ones on order, so we'll see how they do. Neither are the advertised mAh, from what I understand, but somewhat less according to the dealers. All the ones I had that came with 510 PTs are dead, and either cannot be charged anymore, or the PTs don't charge them anymore. So I'm seeing how new ones do, hopefully will be able to have PTs again! If not, I'm buying a Bart or some other mod.

I bought the 510joye PT. I can use my protege charger to charge these batts, which is what I plan to do to help prevent overcharging.
this is now my only backup peice.
I plan on getting some of those batts from deal xtreme.
Let me know if they work out for you.

Ya, I ordered a charger too. Not sure what happened to those 5 PTs, but some of them lasted for months, so I have to think that the batteries are not getting over charged somehow, as this would have happened right away it seems. Its too bad ordering from China takes so long...I promised myself I wouldn't fork out more money for a Bart until I was sure these batts didn't help. Hopefully this week...

I have never been convinced with my pass through, I allways felt it was under powerd, never produced as strong as a battery. Now it only works every second go???
PS its plugged into a pc that is never switched off (file server)

joye 510 pt
I use my PT when I am at home or when I take my laptop with me somewhere. It has always worked great for me. The 510's major drawback is the battery life. The PT really fixes this problem. Reading some of the other posts it seems that people have had trouble with theres I have had no such technical problems with mine. I plug mine into the usb port and dont have to worry anymore about a new battery this combined with the pcc makes things much easier.

I am getting the impression based on much reading about the 510 PT that at least some of the issues with it stem from shotty wiring to the batt box. If this is the case, then it makes sense that there would be two polarized camps: those that have great success, and those that have PTs that die suddenly "without reason". If this is the case with mine, then the batts I ordered (still not here!) will not help, but a soldering iron might! Stay tuned...
