As far as swabbing for nicotine at customs... I don't believe they could do this. I think it would come out positive every time someone who smokes cigarettes touches a package. So they would have to deal with more false positives than would be feasible.

I am unfamiliar with the way the Australian government exactly works but couldn’t you bug the hell out of your local Parliament representative until they do something? If they can’t do something maybe they can point you in the right direction. It's just a thought.

That would require them to actually respond to correspondence We're trying, it just takes time.

Nice, I have sent an e-mail as well just to reinforce the objection to the ban. I have just discovered vaping and refuse to have it fall victim to some political bull.

Here is a copy of a e-mail sent just now to the "Hon" Mr Andrews

Dear Mr Andrews, I am writing to you directly in response to reading an online article at the Herald Sun website.
I would like clarification on a few matters pertaining to this reported ban on the sale of devices.
I write this to you as a user of these products which today being the 31/12/08 are still legal ..
I would appreciate if you could address the following questions.
-On what basis have you implemented the ban , what are the parameters for existing use of the devices for existing users.

-Could you please provide to me studies or reports which you have used in making this decision

-I understand sale of consumables will no longer be able to be carried out in Victoria, will we still be able to buy from interstate and overseas?

-What consultation, if any was made with the electronic smokers within your electorate or in fact the State of Victoria?

    - Why does your Government authorise, and profit from, the sale of nicotine in cigarettes and outlaw a form of nicotine delivery that has no carcinogens, and 4000 chemicals less than tobacco?

    - Is the ban only on the sale or of the USE of such devices and consumables?, is it only relevant to Victoria

I freely admit I am addicted to Nicotine, I have made a informed personal choice on the method I choose to deliver it.
Your banning of these devices in my eyes smacks more of supporting the tobacco companies and your tax revenue than of being in the confines of your portfolio.
I understand Nicotine is a poisonous substance, I understand it is addictive, and I understand that used incorrectly it may cause harm.
I also understand that quitting smoking is a better thing for everyone concerned, I understand that MY choice of delivery is far better for me and those around me than lighting a cigarette !!!
Like any poison , I , and I am sure ANY other user of electronic cigarettes understand that care should be taken in its storage and use.
What I don't understand is how your government can allow and tax a recognised UNHEALTHY delivery method , and OUTLAW another which promises far better outcomes???
I attach a PDF file of Dr Murray Laugesen's interim safety report 2008 from Health New Zealand for your consideration ... could you so kindle please forward to me in kind , ANY scientific reports you have commissioned on this matter???

    Cheers
    Simon Willson

    His e-mail address is daniel.andrews@parliament.vic.gov.au

I am taking some solace in the fact that the ban is only in Victoria at the moment. Hopefully it would be still ok to import??

There are no guarantees, but this seems to be how it's working.

I am new here but have read through the forums before. I am more than a little disappointed with the govt ignorance in terms of the e-cig and would like My chance to give up 'cancer sticks' by whatever means I choose.

That being said, I have noted the attempts to get attention from the govt departments and have a suggestion.....

Smoking is banned in casinos...this being the case, gamblers need to leave their place and stop gambling to go and have a cigarette, thus resulting in something the casino does not like...not gambling and not buying drinks while you are outside....
A similar thing relates to bars/hotels and nightclubs...if people have to go outside (and cant take drinks with them) then they are not drinking etc and thus the establishment is losing revenue...the pokies...how many smokers play those?? BUUUT, again, they need to leave the machine to have a smoke....resulting in...loss of revenue...and Australia has around 20% of the entire WORLDS population of pokie machines.

I will get to the point....if those sort of business entities were to get behind the implementation of the e-cig, then I think the govt would be forced to pay attention. The casinos provide a very large amount of cash to the govt, imagine if they could increase this by not only allowing e-cigs inside, but selling them also....same goes for the other things I mentioned. All these places are over 18/21 only, so the worry of children buying them is practically zero. Even if they sold the disposable ones, it would be a foot in.

Now I know my idea is not directed at the health or giving up aspect, but it is directed at something the govt will pay attention to...tax $$ and lots of them.

Just a thought, happy to hear opinions whether for or against my suggestion
