Totally agree with you. The "what about the childrens" thing is a BS front. Got to admit though- it does prove to be pretty effective for the general population. Unfortunately.

The government is really missing the boat on this issue- obesity! First step, have the FDA declare processed sugar to be the drug that it is. Second, tax the hell out of it. Third, for the sake of our unhealthy children, ban any flavoring to be added to any sugar enhanced product. I can taste that ice cream as I type.

Unfortunately, they are working on this. There is a bill now that is being voted on that if passed there will be an additional tax on candy and soda pop. The tax revenues are supposed to go toward the health care reform program. Some states like New Hampshire are already being taxed by the state for candy products. If thats not bad enough my state just past a bag tax. Now I have to pay $.05 for every plastic bag they use to pack my groceries. I am really starting to dislike these activities of greed and control.

It's really not about children - the 'for the children' excuse is nothing but a strawman that politicians trot out every time they want to guilt people into inaction and increase government power. They know it hits people on a primal level, opens the door for guilt-mongerers who intimidate, and makes us back quietly away while handing over our wallets and our adult rights.

shortly before his death, Michael Crichton wrote a interesting essay entitled "Aliens Caused Global Warming' About 4/5th's of the way thru, he discusses how the FDA used politically-twisted science to turn second-hand smoke into a hysterical 'for the children' issue that greatly increased the regulatory power of the FDA as an agency.. The same agency that took four months to find out where a contaminated tomato came from. As Dr. Drew said recently, e-cigs would have to be pretty darn nasty to even come close to the damage a regular cigarette can do. As long as the juice manufacturers have tight quality control and random testing done by independent labs on a regular basis, (and I'm including the vendors who take it upon themselves to rebottle diluted product) I don't see what all the smoke is about other than power.

What an awesome article!

I have a scientific background, and even I have fallen prey to the "99% of scientists agree" PRing of issues. Reading the whole article has me wondering just how much tainted science I have ingested because of its popularity.

Thanks for posting that link. I feel as if I actually accomplished something today: a rededication to true and verifiable science, instead of popular opinion.

99% of all the journalists out there aren't qualified to draw a conclusion from a scientific article, let alone the actual paper written about it by a real scientist.

Therefore, they shouldn't be able to create headlines from any scientific finding.

It can only lead to half truths (at best) and that amounts to a lie.
