Default FDA Bans Flavors in Tobacco Cigarettes

I signed up for the Medwatch Tobacco news and received a link to this today:

Letter to Industry on Cigarettes Containing Certain Characterizing Flavors

Letter to Industry on Cigarettes Containing Certain Characterizing Flavors

    Excerpt:
As of the September 22, 2009, effective date, cigarettes and their component parts that fail to comply with the special rule established under section 907 are deemed adulterated under section 902 of the Act. Under the Act, adulterated products sold or held for sale in the United States may be subject to seizure under section 304 of the Act. In addition, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers may be subject to injunction actions, civil money penalties, and/or criminal prosecution for violating the requirements of the Act (FFDCA, sections 301, 302, 303). FDA intends to use the full range of enforcement tools within the Agency’s authority to ensure compliance with the new requirement.

"Congress has stated that flavors make cigarettes more appealing to youth and often result in exposure to additional carcinogens and other toxic constituents. The removal from the market of cigarettes that contain certain characterizing flavors is an important step in FDA’s efforts to reduce the burden of illness and death caused by tobacco products."

This quote right here is how the FDA uses fear and saftey to obtain their goals. Expect more in the future and expect more to buy into it. That is the reality of it.

So... do they consider menthol a flavor? Because if so, I'll be able to hear the screaming from my front porch.

It excludes menthol and tobacco flavors. But I understand a lot of cigarette tobacco is subtly flavored (not to overpower the tobacco but to enhance it... am I saying this right?) I thought a lot of regular tobacco cigarettes had some vanilla and caramel flavors in them... am I wrong here?

They will make new laws because they don't have time or resources to enforce the laws they already have in place. These sorts of laws are now requiring the manufacturers to comply, when in fact, they should be enforced by the convenience store clerks, and parents.

Granted, there is really no way to keep a kid who wants them from getting cigarettes (even if there was an all-out ban on tobacco), if there's a will, there's a way. It's always been that way, and always will. ....... and ......... are just as easy to obtain today as before they were considered illegal, you just have to know the right people.

Did you hear that? That's your freedom being flushed down the toilet, one law at a time.

I am seriously losing my faith in government agencies more and more every day.

And I really didn't have a lot to begin with.

    Commentary:

Flavor cigarette ban curbs freedom, helps big tobacco keep selling

A well written article. The comments are interesting, but this one is especially disturbing:

    GOD says:
They need to ban ALL smoking tobacco. NOBODY has ever benefited from smoking tobacco! Any person that smokes within 100 feet of a child should be executed on the spot! Any woman that subjects her fetus to tobacco or any other defilement should be given a hysterectomy and have her vagina cauterized! It's deplorable that a so-called "parent" would intentionally cause damage to their children's health in order to get a fix. NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO HARM CHILDREN!!!!!!

It begs the question, what if e-cigs are designated a 'tobacco product'? Does that mean that if they intend to ban all flavors, they effectively leave you vaping plain pg/vg??
As far as I am concerned, I feel for you guys over there. You are ruled by a bunch of totalitarian scumwads.

Well, if they have their way, we'd all have to go back to cancer sticks anyway.
