Eric Clapton was Stevie Ray Vaughn's sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous...Stevie died in a crash in Claptons' borrowed (spare) helicopter... Clapton has been quoted saying Stevie was the absolute best all around guitar player he had ever seen....Hendrix IMO would definatley win in the inovation category (if there was one)...Stevie had around 2 years sober when he died, after struggling with heroin and alcohol for many years...Clapton still owns and operates one of the most exclusive Rehabs in the world in Antigue and does provide a number of scholarships anually in memory of Stevie...

As awesome as Clapton is, Jimi and SRV were just a step above Clapton in the "soul" department. I can't pick one over the other, they were both the definition of guitar god.

Must say Stevie Ray Vaughn is tops in my list of guitar gods, however... need to add: Randy Rhoads (incredible, and most forget about him due to his untimely death in 1982) And, a must add to the list... Eddie Van Halen! Hellen the Headbanger's three favs!
