My mod has no kill switch and I had it in my purse the other day (not sure why...I never do that) and of course the button was pressed and it was on for quite sometime. Long enough to melt the cartridge and smell AWFUL!! It is scary stuff!! I AM using protected batteries though. Thanks to Nico, Sun and Lucky
Glad you weren't hurt, eskimo!

You got it. Please do tell us all about your CR2 mods and keep us updated about how well they work and whether or not you get a case of hotpants. Please only model protected batteries, safe switches, and a cautious outlook in tutorial threads (like my NicoStick How to thread). If you aren't one to tell us how and show us pics of the whole process, no worries except when you go to my thread and question my advocacy of protected batts
. (Last part not intended for you Nuck)

Queen and eskimo....I am so Glad you are both ok...we cannot afford to lose any members of the forum due to unprotected batteries...or protected ones minus the kill switch!! Please everyone use extreme caution!!!...and thanks to Sun..Nico..and Lucky also!!

Thanks Wiz, many want to minimize my thoughts and even mock me on this forum, which is extremely immature and obvious, but my vote goes towards safety first for everyone!

Lucky...I will side with you every time when it comes to being an advocate for safety!!!

Thanks Wiz, and I'm glad I also could help make Queen and others aware. I feel this is a very important issue and I don't care to see another thread started on someone getting hurt. Hot pants and hot purse are not good at all.

Li-ion and Li-poly
If you read the warning labels of most Li-ion and Li-poly batteries they discuss the warnings about the possibilities of explosions. Using protected cells will not eliminate the possibility of explosions, but will reduce its possible occurrence. The chemistry of Li-ion and Li-poly is much more unstable in comparison to NIMH. There are many devices that use Li-ion and li-poly batteries that function just fine. Cell phones and cameras use protection circuitry built into the devices to control charging and overdischarging. The current load used by those devices is also far less than what we are expecting from our batteries in our e-cigs. The other avenue that is not really discussed is quality of cell construction. High current load from a small battery creates heat. If the batteries are cheaply made... and they are stressed through high load... there is the possibility of internal battery failure due to poor construction or manufacture. In other words... even with a protected battery... these failures can still occurr even if they are protected. If the internal cell structure of the battery breaks down... and the nature of the chemistry of Li-ion and li-poly is unstable... an explosion can still occurr.
For risk reduction.
1) If you are using Li-ion and Li-poly use protected batteries that are made by reputable companies. Sanyo, Saft etc etc. Many of these manufacturers produce batteries for cell phone mfr's and others. Many of these mfr's don't want lawsuits due to internal battery failure, and chances are that internal battery design and quality control is of a higher standard.
2) Always use protected quality cells.
3) If your battery has "vented" don't keep using it. There is a much higher risk that the internal structure of the battery has been compromised. With the chemistry of Li-ion and Li-poly being unstable, this could mean danger.
I personally use nimh's in my mods. Yes...they are a little bigger.. but in my mind they are safer because of there chemistry. I always use the proper charger peak detection, and there isn't the high risk of cell explosion if damaged.

eskimoroll , im glad youre okay
that would have been an unexpected and unpleasant situation to be in
just out of interest could you please give some details on the type of charger you use for your batteries ,average charge time you use and maybe how long you use them before recharging
ive been using unprotected cr ,cr123's and 18650's for quite a long time and am in direct daily contact with 8 other people who use my mods with these batteries as well , i have never given a second thought to the potential for this event to occur but from now on will keep this in mind when making future mods
i do only use chargers with inbuilt overcharge protection cut off circuits but all batteries are just plain unprotected types , they never even get warm when charging even when left in the charger for well over 24hrs
yes i forgot about them
usually im much more dilligent about these things
if i ever do a "how to" thread i will include a warning for this situation
thanks for the heads up
