For batteries, the atomizers in a regular e-cig use a small 3.7 V rechargeable Li-ion battery, which someone said was a 333 mAh battery (they are 140 to 200 mAh Average Stock Bat, (Note: chinese to american translation ratings are usually off, mAh rating stated by the manufacturers are usually off as well! Just How it is.) .

Some mods on this forum use higher-capacity 3.7 V Li-ion batteries such as a 14500 (do google) which is about the same size as a AA battery (I Added the Search Link, Please Check The DIM, Higher Capacity I believe vslim is referring to mAh) .

Other mods use three AA 1.5 V batteries (total in series 4.5V, see Juicy box thread by Jaaxx). I think I am going this route as NiMH rechargeable batteries are easy to get and do not have the hazards associated with Li batteries (There are No Hazards with Lithium Ion Batteries Unless your a ....., They Are & Have Been Used In Cell Phones For Years and are the Latest Technology, The Only Issue May Be With Using The Un-Protected Lithium Batteries Type & Not Knowing What You Are Doing) .

Other mods use straight USB power (about 5 volts) which is said to provide about 1 amp current through a cold atomizer (Computer USB Ports are limited to 500 mAh Max, When Using A Battery Pack or AC to DC Adapter, 5 Volt 1000 mAh or Higher Is Used Frequently as The Power Source).

No one seems to be sure about the current that 3.7 - 5 volts puts through a hot atomizer (? What? This is a Variable Depending On the Voltage, Hot, Cold, the Atoms Condition, etc and it will change it, U can do some of the Math) .

It seems to me that the operating current for the atomizer is probably between 1/3 and 1 amp althought some mods have reported using higher voltage and thus current (Magnum mod) (This Will Vary depending On Your Mod, You Should Limit It To a Max Of 5 Volts, But Depends On The Voltage Used For Your Mod for The mAh).

BTW if you choose to go the NiMh route I got a 'travel charger' for these batts on clearance at Radio Shack yesterday for $1.59! (No Comment)

For saving your atomizer you need to check around the forum for tips on cleaning it. (Nice Tip, But All Current Atomizers Fail Shortly Anyways, Cleaning Usually = Failure, Ya Some Others Say Otherwise, I'm Not Going To argue, I don't Really Care)

Hope this helps, (Yes I Do)

You may have your hubby look into making you a usb mod as well. That way when your at your computer you dont have to worry about a battery at all. Maddog did a extremely helpful video of how he made his mod. I am going to attempt to put a link here I hope it works. Magnum_DIY.wmv
If it doesnt you should be able to copy and paste it into your browser.
I hope that helps. Welcome to the forums.

Oh the batteries I use in my magnum mod are CR2 (2 of them).

Thank you both so much! This is exactly the type of information he asked me for. It's certainly much more on target (and probably more accurate) than the diverse notes I managed to compile through searches. My electronics knowledge is basic, but I'll post what he comes up with if he's still reluctant to participate in a forum setting.

I'm very glad he's excited about an aspect of e-cigarettes. He seems to need time to get used to vaping vs. the $6 a pack clove cigarettes, which may taste better but are particularly bad health-wise. Hopefully the hobby aspect will keep him interested rather than frustrated over the drawbacks.
And I do plan on ordering spare parts as soon as is possible.

If you still need more info then have a look for threads started by Bastage and Madog. They both are wizards with mods and give great details and instructions.

I just wanted to mention that I'm really looking forward to your wiring diagram. I'm soldering AND wiring inept so that would really help me out.

TxTrouble, a USB passthrough is what I'm saving up for since much of his time is in the card and my own is at my computer. I was going to get that and a number of atomizers and maybe regular batteries to make the shipping from bestecig worthwhile. I asked him about making the passthroughs, but he said it wasn't worthwhile (could probably be translated as not being nearly as much fun as coming up with his own look for the e-cigs ).

I find the step by step instructions and videos very informative, and put Greger in a room with Bastage and Madog and they'd probably come up with all sorts of mad inventions together LOL. However, his method is usually to hit the discount store for his own choice of parts and desired look then throw them together himself. His profession deals with electronics to a large extent so how to put everything together isn't the issue once he knows how something is supposed to work. He didn't want to guess and use trial and error as far as voltage and such goes, hence the request for the specs. He's probably got enough info to go on his shopping spree now, but I'll have to wait until he gets in from his temp job today to be sure.

It sounds like your husband will definately be able to figure out how to make any mod. I actually have an 801 and 901 usb mod on my desk at the moment that I use. All my mods are made by my better half Ripley. I would burn down the house if I had a solder gun or hot glue gun in my hand. Not to mention the parts fly through the air as I get frustrated. I just dont have the patience for that type of stuff.
I also bought the APC battery pack so I can use my usb anywhere I go although I dont use it in public. I get plenty of questions with my e-cig I dont need more with what are you sticking in your mouth with a wire that goes to your pocket questions.
You can also find a plug for your car that will take a usb plug.
I honestly think if your husband can make a magnum mod then he can easily handle the usb mod and it will be a lot cheaper then if you buy it retail.
Good luck. E-cigs can be frustrating at first but once you get the hang of it it becomes as second nature as smoking.

Check out Deal Extreme they have good prices and free shipping. You do have to wait a while to get your order though.

For the USB power sources I found a car plug USB and a wall USB travel charger, both at Walgreen's about $8 each.
