Thanks for the reply RjG
I was thinking more along the lines of taking the vacuum switch out completely and using that space to fit a manual switch, with a hole in the side of the cigar body for the switch to pop through.
I'm not hugely worried about the led operating so, the right spacing and finding a suitable switch would seem to be the major issues.

If you want a full manual cigar, start with this maybe?
DealExtreme: $25.53 Health Electronic Cigarette with Chargers and Refills Set (Semi-Automatic)
I don't have one, and I've heard they are kinda cheap and crappy, but it might get you a lot closer to what you want. Then you just have to fix whatever is crappy on it (new switch or atomizer maybe) rather than redesign the innards,

I just checked out the patent drawings for Ruyan and along with this explanation, I just wanted to run my understanding of this atomizer theory by you all.
Firstly, it seems that the chip does most of the work. I didn't notice here or in the schematic, but you would have to have a vacuum switch to sense the change in pressure, which activates the circuit.
The circuit allows the batteries power to go an amplifier that... and this is the part where my 15yr. old electronics training is failing me...steps down the voltage, increasing the current?
This voltage is then applied to the Nichome, and when met with the increased resistance creates a nice current spike. This current spike converts to heat, transfers to the wick, which then transfers the heat to the mesh.
That seems right, but like I said it's been a while, and I've been getting rusty, and I may have this all wrong and just totally made a fool of myself

Damn RjG..great pictures. Next time I get some spare time from work I'm really gonna have to start learning how to mod this crap. It looks like way too much fun. Expect to get a flood of noob PM's when the time comes

Great job!

RjG - So impressive, rebuilding the atomiser with a new coil - and getting good photos of the steps too, with informative ccomments. Good work.

Does anyone have any idea how long they have been out of stock on the good stuff, like DSE901s and battery eCigars? Should I get my hopes up?

RjG - as you are able to create a new coil, have you considered changing the design further, other than going for the lower resistance? For example, using thicker wire but a longer length - so more sturdy and larger heating area.

Yes, I've made several. The only change that did any good was making the cold coil in to a hot coil (ruyan specifically have cold coils, RN cigars are nice and hot).
I've tried bigger wick, and smaller wick for mods. And wick with "tails".
All worked worse than the original design.
I have some thinner nichrome wire from a longtotem atomizer, but it burned out in two shots, lol
I never tried thicker wire, since that would require a longer coil that won't fit in the hole, and it would need way more power to run it.
I think pretty much concluded any deviation from a good working atomizer leads to a worse working one...
