Now now, lets not believe everything you read in the Telegraph... While it is true that the modern kilt and tartan nonsense we see today is the work of the Victorians, the kilt, plaid and patterns (you'll notice it did not use the word tartan) are much earlier. I hate to quote wikipedia but Kilt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is not too inaccurate.
