Hey Muff
It's gonna be good. I'd advise a generic pen or mini (RN4072 or DSE901) from smokester or pillbox. That's e-cig.co.uk or theelectroniccigarette.co.uk. Most beginners prefer a cigarette-like device to begin with but this wears off quickly as the supermini models fall down on battery life and cart life. However some of them are great devices - comes down to preference. The two models above are pretty cheap though, and will give a good introduction to e-smoking. Good luck and you're going to love it...

Lots of us have been able to quit with ecigs but it's not for everyone. You do not get the same kick as with burning tobacco, there simply aren't the same chemicals. You can up your nicotine intake to massive doses and you still wouldn't get the tobacco hit.
Have a look at this to help calculate nic - Nicotine safety
Both the Evo and 901 get good reviews, it's going to be personal preference which one to go for.
EDIT
Nice to see you posting Emp

I've only smoked for half of your time, which is 15 years but i managed to quit the normal cigs within days of using the e-cig. Wishing you all the best....

The M401 is getting good reviews too, that's the same as Intellicig's Evo.

1st day for me with a super mini and a 901. I prefer the mouth piece on the 901 over the super mini.
I must admit the wicked plati does look nice and I'm having 1 in the new year.
Welcome aboard.

Forgot to ask the only other thing is the cartridge using high/very high cartridges does everyone else find that they need a higher cartridge to start off with or am I better going for medium hoping will get used to it rather than starting high trying to go lower later?

Was just wondering is it normal to have to use high/very high cartridge compared to my normal o.8mg cigs (smoke 20+ a day as a rule)
There really is no such thing as "normal" in this business.....it all depends on personal needs and preferences. If you feel you needed the high/very high to feel anything, it might not hurt to maybe try the high....since it's just cartridges you probably won't OD.
My brother smoked one pack of Marlboro lights a day and he likes the medium (11mg)....but he did smoke some high carts I had laying around and didn't have a problem with them. Just as you don't want to go too high, you also don't want to go too low and be stuck with something that isn't working. It may make you want to smoke analogs more (or again).
Hope this helped.
