Joye 510 Atty & Harsh Throat Hit Fix
After a 36 year 1 PAD habit, I have been smoke free now for 19 days thanks to my Joye 510 MANUAL, but my new found freedom from smoking cigs, has come with a learning curve and a scorched throat from the harsh hits. I've tried so many different mods & fillers, and thanks to this forum, this is what works for me...
I have modified my carts by taking out filler material,
I added 1/2" drinking straw (to hold up fluval) to cart
with two small "V" cuts on bottom edge,
I fill up cart almost to the top with juice,
and add 1/4" of fluval just on top,
then add more juice to top off & wet fluval.
I also add 1-2 drops of juice to atty if dry.
Look at the color of your new fluval after you've topped off with juice, and when it gets darker (bad taste) change to new fluval. If the atty fits snug to the battery, and fluval fills the top, it will not leak, and you will use all your juice without constantly topping off. Take 2-3 second easy drags, so as not to overheat the atty, then let go of the button and keep dragging 1-2 secs. for an even better taste & battery life! Always keep the atty wet without flooding. If it floods (gurgles) blow out atty from battery end. Also wipe out battery before charging (only makes sense). Also, I now like the round mouth pieces, because you can remove the end for cleaning. If you put a paperclip in the hole, you can easily pull the end off to clean excess fluid out.
Being determined to make this work for my throats sake, I then decided to take a chance by removing the 4-5 little wicks that stuck out from under the atty bridge. I couldn't see these at first, but they were apparent now. I carefully took them out with a flashlight & a very pointed tweezers. Some of them were burnt, maybe from my leaning curve, and smoking a dry atty. Once I removed these strings I have the best vape ever! No more harsh throat hit!!!
I'm getting some new attys, so I will see if the new ones cause the same harsh throat hit, or if it was only because I burnt them during my learning curve. I've read that some here automatically remove these strings/wicks, and others say that they have a purpose so don't remove them 'cause it may ruin your atty. IMO mine was already ruined so I took the chance. If you remove them pull gently so as not to break the bridge. It worked for me, and now I vape smooth clouds of sweet vaper! It was all worth it, 'cause I've made it this far, and have no intentions of turning back. I am so grateful!!!

Actually, it's more like 1/8" fluval on top. Sorry.

I tried this after the PTB and other Straw method didn't work too well for me. I did, as was suggested in the thread discussing the Spring mod, cut my straw in half and put the 2 halves in my cart like so: )( I cut a V on the bottom of each half like so: |/\| In part to give the straw halves a little springiness, but I assume it also helps with flow.
It has worked out great for me. Good flow, no leaking, no constantly topping off, and no wasted liquid as it all gets used up.

If you like your 510 atomizers without the supplemental wick (the part that you pulled out), you might want to consider getting some of the SLB 510 "clone" atomizers from Rob at VaporKings. They are a slightly different design, and they don't have the wick from the beginning. They also run a slightly higher resistance... which will also make for a slightly "cooler" vape. I have a couple and they work quite well.
If you get these atomizers, you might want to consider picking up some blank (or pre-filled) 901 whistle tip carts while you're there. They fit better and work better on these atomizers. Hold a bit more liquid too.

Hey Grateful - I'm loving my 510 manual too. But if you'd asked me a few days ago, I would have cussed it. That harsh taste is awful, and I was having big problems with it. But fluval is great stuff. I mod my carts with it too, though not the same way as you, and I vape them dry. It's very satisfying to open up that cart and see that I'm not wasting any liquid.
Another tip I picked up is to store your 510 with the LED pointing down to led gravity assist the wicking. And occasionally shake it like a thermometer to force the fluid towards the atomizer. Very simple. And since I started doing this, I haven't had a single harsh hit.
Thank God, too - because I started reading threads here and thought I was gonna have to boil my atomizers every night. Or even worse, buy some vodka (not a good idea for me).

Be careful removing the wicks in the 510 attys - it has reportedly killed a lot of attys. I killed one that way myself.
