Well, after watching many videos on YouTube, both linked here and from YT searches, I was ready for when my DSE-901 started blinking and blinking and blinking to tell me it was "cleaning itself". I saw in several different videos were people had suggested to quickly unscrew the battery to prevent the burnt, nasty taste the atomizer will have for a while after it does that. That is what I did, but it still has a pretty crappy taste to it. My 555 Kick Juice that did have a nice berry taste (not really like tobacco at all) now tastes like burnt cotten candy (and yes, I have tasted that before). It's not all that bad, and I could get used to it if the burnt taste sticks around for as long as some people say (upwards of 40 "cigarettes"), but is there anything easy I can do to get rid of it without risking damage to the atomizer? Thank you! |

I've been there more then once..... lol I usually disassemble it, blow into the atomizer from the battery side to get the burnt juice out, using a paper towel so I don't get it all over. Use a new cartridge or take the fluff out of the burnt flavored cartage and gently blot burnt juice into the paper towel, put the filler back in. Put a drop or two of the juice on the atomizer and fill your cart. Reassemble and enjoy, you may still taste the burnt for a little bit but it should get better quickly, couple puffs |

I think it is the cartridge that produces the bad smell. Next time the autoclean kicks in, just remove the cart. It is much quicker than fumbling with the battery. I do it all the time and I do not have this bad taste after autoclean. But I do blow it out after each autoclean - mostly to improve perfomance/prolong life.

It is the cartridge. I find it's much better to remove the cart and let the cleaning cycle run. The atomiser normally performs better afterwards. Shame they didn't make it a manual thing like the cigars though. |

The burnt taste goes away much, much sooner if washing out the parts (not the battery of course - just the filler, cartridge, and atomizer) with hot soap and water - and then hairblowing them dry. Otherwise it'll linger around for a long time [!]. I especially recommend doing this on the very first atomizer self-clean which is really nasty. |

Thank you all for the tips. As an update, I did change out the cart which I had just been topping off over and over. The taste is now gone, but my atomizer is making a gurggling sound. It had been for a while, so I think I do need to clean it out. Is it safe to submerge the atomizer is water, or is there some other way I clean it with the soap and water? It seems that something like that would be killed from being submerged, but I don't really know exactly how they work. Thanks!

Atomizers are ok to submerge...some even put them in boiling water (there's an entire thread on cleaning atomizers somewhere on here). I personally wouldn't use soap though...just plain water...or vinegar...some people use Everclear liquor....LOL If you can find that thread, there are several suggestions on it....but the short answer is yes, you can submerge them.
