I've read that nicotine doesn't stay in your system for long too but that's not the whole story unfortunately. It changes the structure of your brain, something to do with dopamine receptors I think and we get more stressed when we don't have nicotine to keep the chemical balance we're used to. It's possible to go without nic for a long time but it affects mental balance among other things.
You need to go without nicotine for at least three weeks to get over most of the physical dependencies. Your brain chemistry will never recover.

You will find people are quite different when it comes to nicotine addiction. I can tell that, yes, I left movies to go have a cigarette. The cigarette need was always there. If I woke up in the middle of the night, I reached for a cigarette -- and smoked in bed. I smoked and ate at the same time. I smoked while my hair was being cut. And it didn't get better after a few hours either. It got worse. A few days? Worse yet. Cross me at that point and I would rearrange your face. And I mean that!
With every other quit attempt before this one, people near me begged me to start smoking again, so the calm, happy person I had been would return.
I am thrilled if cravings just go away for you after a short while. I've heard a few others say that, so it must be true -- for them. Just don't extrapolate to everyone what you have experienced. Your experience was never mine.

Wow TB - it sounds like we have the same type of cravings. I refused to watch Titanic in the theater and waited for DVD - specifically 'cause there was no way I was sitting that long without a smoke. Same for all the LOTR movies - LOL. And friends definitely did not like the person I became trying to quit.
Just as there is no one-size-fits-all diet, we all have our unique struggles with this addiction of ours - but it's wonderful to have this forum to interact and realize we are not alone!

The only withdrawal symptom I got was some ache on my shoulder and this was at the end of the 4 hour break(3 and 2 hour breaks on the same day).
Do you after watching a good movie for 1 hour in movie theather start sucking your finger or do you enjoy the movie till it ends? Did you take a cigarette break while watching Titanic that lasted for whipping 3 hours?
There is no biological clock that says you need a fix at a given time or else...
You dont want to congratulate me. I'm not trying to quit but to test the limits a bit.
If I make it through an entire movie at the theater is is generally because I spent the first hour of the movie eating and the second drinking soda and chewing my straw to bits. No, I don't suck on my finger, but I do replace the cigarette with a "pacifier" whether it be food or a straw or I will get up during the movie and go out for a smoke. I did not take a cigarette break while watching Titanic but that was mostly because it was my first date with the man that would a year later become my husband and so I was more hyped up on puppy love and was able to make it through...barely. Like Bg, I have passed on seeing certain movies at the theater because of their length simply because I knew I'd have to miss part of the movie to have a cigarette. Like TB, if I wake up during the night I want a cigarette and when I was smoking analogs I would get out of bed and go outside to have one regardless of the weather. Now, I simply reach to my nightstand and vape away for a few then go back to sleep.
So, while there may not be a biological clock that tells me when I have to have a fix there is most certainly an addiction response in my body that tells me when I have to have one. And, since you don't want my congratulations I take it back...lol.

It doesn't matter how you do it for the first time. Just make sure you memorize well what you have accomplished and how good/bad it felt like. Also make sure you don't reward yourself too much or it becomes a substitute. Start slowly changing every possible detail on how, when, why you get your fix. Do not try to push it, this isn't a race. When it gets too easy, change something else. The changes do not have to be permanent nor do you have to stop using nic altogether.
I actually found a name for this type of therapy and it is called systematic desensitization. According to wiki it is used to treat phobias and other anxiety disorders.

And you think I didn't do that? My usual routine was first to smoke a cig, brush my teeth, have a another cig and then hit the bed. No sleep within one hour, another cig and try again.
