Look at all the beta-carboline in Passiflora Incarnata.

3 more days and I start the Passiflora Incarnata Tx condition instead of the Uncaria tomentosa in my herbal remedy Case Study.... Can't wait .

    Smoking as tranquilizer

Smoking has the dual experiential effects: stimulant + tranquilizer, that puts one in a good place for dealing with stress; creating relaxation (from worry, and so hightened concentration), without becoming sedated.

Both are important, but of the two, I'd say that the 'mild tranquilizer' effect is the key. Even without a stimulant, lessening negative thoughts and feeling calmer allows more focussed attention and increased productivity.

Nicotine is able to produce these effects via enhacing production of dopamine (boosted and widened by MAOIs). As noted before, there are tie-ins with opioid receptors and their reward system.
"Marina Picciotto, a professor of psychiatry at Yale University, says that the findings suggest that nicotine's action ultimately relies on mu-opioid receptors, much as the actions of many other addictive drugs do. "There are common circuits involved in mediating the effects of these drugs ..."

GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid - the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter) has been shown to be able to completely substitute for nicotine in animal studies.
"... boosts production of gamma-aminobutyric acid. This brain chemical inhibits release of dopamine, one of the intermediate substances in the biosynthesis of epinephrine and norepinephrine. ... Production of dopamine is triggered by nicotine, ......., alcohol, and some other drugs".

btw, The ability of GABA to alleviate cravings is worthy of note in its own right. no need for the patentable vinyl form used in the study; real GABA would almost certainly do the same, without taking a chance with vinyl toxicity.

Fantastic research, kinabaloo. Cheering you on here. I think you ought to get in touch with, if not Dekang, one of the smaller e-juice manufacturers and get a prototype juice + alkaloids mix made. Hell they ought to pay you

    Thanks!

I'd be surprised if the manufacturers don't peruse the forums.

Hey, kin, asked this in the other thread, too. What do you mean by "real GABA". I got lost a little. I know, surprised me, too .

Couple of questions before I completely lose my mind.

An MD told me beta carbolines were nicotine antagonists, if he is right beta carbolines would make cravings worse; was he completely wrong or am I missing something?

What are we looking for with GABA, agonists or antagonists?

    kinabaloo,

You are so right, that's exactly what is missing, at least for me, I have been vaping 16mg and 24mg, when I started I didn't notice any withdraw symptom but the relaxation part was/is missing...

An analog gives me a felling of calm, but vaping just seems to increase my stress levels

    Default passion flower, etc.

Hi all, I just joined this forum. This is actually my first post. I found this discussion interesting. I weened myself off antidepressants using what I call my "herbal prozac" mixture. It is a combination of passion flower, valerian, and skullcap. I use them in an alcohol-based tincture. I have pounds of the herbs in my cupboard.
Anyway, I decided to try some of the valerian and passion flower in my PV. The result was frankly awesome! I have smoked passionflower in the past, so I already knew what to expect. Very calming. I do think it could be a powerful addition to the nic. I am hoping to slowly step down and think the addition may improve my odds of getting off the nic once and for all. I am new to vaping, so I am still trying to figure out what strength nic. I should be using. I think about 12 mg. is what I need. I tried 16 mg. and it was like the first time I ever tried cigs. at the age of 12. I turned green and was immensely nauseous for hours. I will continue to experiment with the passion flower until I can figure out how to not flood the atty.
Very interesting research and thread. Now, if someone could manufacture a juice that combines the PF and the nic, or PF, nic, and valerian, I would be a happy vaper!

The beta carbolines maintain MAO levels through inhibiting oxidase enzymes that break MAOs down. So increasing the effect of effect of nicotine and adding a second more calming dimension.
