When I was in the army we would have field problems were we would be out in the field for two to three weeks at a time. You left with a rucksack and all you could put in it and got MRE's and water but that was it.

I would always take an extra carton of smokes and hump them along with me till close to the end. There were always a bunch of people who would NEVER bring enough and we called them the bum junkies. After a while the bum junkies would get cut off and come to me. Sometimes I would auction off packs they would go for around $25 and up and this was for generics that I bought at the PX for $5 a carton. The last day I would auction off individual smokes the highest I ever got for one cig was $15.

If you think that is cruel I could tell you some of the other stories we played on the bum junkies.

Back when normal premium brands were around $1.25 a pack, I used to occasionally treat myself to some Nat Shermans, which cost about twice as much. Even bought a few cartons for what seemed like a pricey $25 or so. That was more than 25 years ago. I just did a little Googling and found them now selling for $12 a pack (actually $60.50 for five packs). So they're still roughly double. (edit: the longest cigarettes I ever bought were also Nat Shermans, 200mm Fantasias.)

I stopped buying single packs when a convenience store shocked me with $5 for a pack of More Reds years ago. Then, I stopped buying cartons locally and went to the Ukraine for the last few years I smoked cigarettes. When the outrageous taxation forces hordes of people to quit or to find alternatives, they will have killed the goose that laid the golden egg. They'll have to find another sin tax to take its place.

When they first stuck the huge tax on, I ordered online cigs from Kentucky for less than a dollar a pack. Then they told everyone that if they got caught they would have to pay back taxes of about $3 a pack. So I started to do the RYO (roll your own) then they increased the tax on them by over 400%. It was based on weight so the RYO guys started making dryer tobacco and it was bad and still more expensive. So I was looking on the RYO forum and someone was talking about E-cigs.

    End of story.

here in Alberta, Canada - regular brands are around 13$, while the cheap brands are 10$
They hiked up the taxes on it pretty steep pretty quickly too.
